Fiem J uliussen (Kaw) appeared to be a fading second in the 100cc GP race until the competition's machinery got a bad case of the blahs. Since Rob Crecelius (Kaw, too) couldn't catch Flem, who won. After that it was time for the Kevin Stafford show, starring "Kenny" (as the announcer kept calling him) himself. Kevin started in front of the combined field of 200 and 125 machinery on his 125 Yamaha. He stayed in front for the distance. John Lassak (Yam) was second. First Junior in the 125 class was Jeff Shetler (Yam), who finished about third overall in only about his fourth road race. Al Nowocinski .(yeah, Yam) was second Junior. The 125's are faster than the 200's because Yamaha makes a spiffy tittle production racer. Breaking up the 125's was the first 200, straddled by Jay Young (Suz). The second half of the Kevin Stafford showwas also brought to you by Yamaha. Kevin never looked threatened in the 250 GP race after Larry Bishop (Yam, natch), who's only a Junior, outbraked both Kevin and himself into the first tum. Larry had to use. that extra bit of straight so thoughtfully provided by OCIR, and, in so doing, lost several spots. He worked back up to second, but Stafford looked like he didn't want to fool around anymore. Kevin finished with a comfortable lead. Second Junior, who held second while Bishop was messing around off-course, was Harry Klinzman (more Yam). After that Rudy Galindo had a walk-away in the fust six laps of the 350 GP event. When Rudy broke his chain, Bob Crossman showed that the fust ones now shall later be passed as he went on to win soundly. Waldemar Karpynec was the first Junior and like everyone else was riding a (Yam). Maybe not everyone; John Lassak had the audacity to finish as second Junior on a Kawasaki. If you were down in the tower turn during the Lightweight (0-200) Production event, you got to watch John Stein drive around John Chermak (Yam) after Chermak powered by him every lap on the straigh t. In the closing laps Chermak caught on and won handily. Stein wasn't supposed to ride this race but the scheduled rider, Mark Avereh, played bump-me/crash-you with Georll"' Roche in practice, sustaining a suspected broken finger. Averch turned his California Kawasaki over to Stein. S. James McKennen (Yammy) did up third place, and Rob Crecelius took his Kawasaki in for the 125 win. George Roche led Rod Murufas and Steve Lang at least all the way in the Yamaha parade that was the 350 Production class. Quarter liter Production was Richard Barron's. His Yamaha was hotly pursued by Gerhard Kelmm's Kawasaki. Bob Endicott howled off to win the Open GP race from Rudy Galindo who'd put on a new chain, enabling him to finish second. Open Junior was won by Bob's tuner, Jim Dickenson, who, like Endicott, rode an overbored Action Fours Honda 500. The 500 Senior class went to another Honda 500, Fred Walti's. Leonard Gilliland did it differently, winning 500 Junior with a Kawasaki. The day ended with Cook Neilson leading the 500/0pen Production event start to finish in his last ride on his Ducati 750. For future races he's getting· a fast one. Fred Walti was second, going like the bejeesus on his Honda 500. Lack of HP's kept a good man down, but Fred got the 500 win. • George Roche (78) leads Rod Murufas. Best battle of the day was between John Stein (96) and John Chermak. Chermak was the winner.
