CMC at Irwindale By John Bethea IRWINDALE, CAL., OCT. 14 Tim Lunde returned to the CMC winner's circle for the first time in several months, but the surprising thing about it is that his victory came in the 500 Expert class on a Maico. He swept the class wins in the process. This is the sixth different brand of bike he's raced this season in CMC competition and he just may have found a new sponsor and ride. Gary Benge (CZ) ripped off seconds in all three rounds with last week's winner, Dennis Clark (CZ), stashing away two thirds and a fourth for third overall. Maico also topped the 250 Expert, this time with Irwindale power Jeff Vidic at the controls. On top of the action in the fmal pair of motos, taking seconds, was Randy Myers (BuI), only about three weeks away from clinching the CMC Championship. Recent pro transfer Mike Gillman (Yam) tallied third on points. Chuck Bower (Pen), even though not with a clean sweep, easily aced the 125 Experts. Only Mark Tyer (Pen) tarnished Chuck's win record tonight, doing it in the second moto after a third in the first race. He took second overall on that total only as he failed to score in the third round. Third went to another Penton talent, Mike Garrett. All three Intermediate classes resulted in two·for·three outings for the winners. Joe Aragon (Yam) added a sixth to his pair in taking the 125 class from Cliff Lett (Hon). In the 250 class Steve Bebeck fmOOed third to Mark Lawrence in the final round, but still aced him out in the overall tally; both on CZs. Later, Jeff Witherell (CZ) topped the 500 by adding two wins to a first moto third. Calvin Weber (CZ) scored second on points. Doug Nicol (Hon) and Jerry Bower (Bul) also pulled off overalls via two round wins in Mini-eyles and 500 Junior classes. In the other three Junior classes, it was winner·take·all Finals and taking all in those were Lance Moorewood (IOO·lnd), Don Aragon (125.Suz) and Steve Tafoyama (250·Hon). The Irwindale Championships for Juniors and Intermediates, complete with four·foot high trophies for first places, is set for Friday, November 2. Riders need only sign up the night of the Championships. No need to qualify, however, there is a limited entry so get there early. • D EtX • MARINA DEL REV I'.jjol.,. :-7:•. ,_ _ AlAFLTEAS 9 HANDLEBARS K&N ENGINEERING PO Box 1329. Ri ....rside.
