IMAM' I ~ A" __ I AD.R'SS CITY I I I STATE Z1P _ _ I I ~------------------~ Dave Pessy (Hon) collected first place cash in the 250 Experts for the 17th time this season, ",11 at night. The CMC record for one season is 20, which he set last season. He has a very strong chance at breaking that mark before the year is out. Randy Myers (BuI) snuck into second overall, the 14th time he's been runner-up this year. It's that consistency that has all but crushed Nelson Whitehill's chance at overtaking him for the CMC Season Points Championship. Nelson f'mished seventh in the 250's. Penton-mounted Bruce McDougal brought his win total for the year to 36, now 16 away from Tim Hart's standard. He did it by cleanly sweeping the 125 Experts while his teammate Chuck Bower had to fend off the three-race charges' from Chuck Lunde (Hon). Bower held the final advantage with two seconds and a third with Lunde sconng via two thirds and a second. The third rider of note was Bob Messer (Mai) ·taking the disqualification-ridden 500 Experts. Several riders were scratched completely in single motos for course cutting during the night, mostly caused by very tight racing. The rule states that' when leaving the course a rider must return at that same point. The CMC officials have been a bit lax on this rule recen t1y, often times just bumping a rider down one position in the race. The , infringements have become too frequent of late, so the crackdown came abruptly which made a few violators a bit I.\nhappy. It was Messer's third consecutive nigh t win since his comeback from an injury. Earlier this year, Bob had four straigh t seconds before his crash and fracture. Now, he can't be beaten. Jim West (Hus), 12-time winner on the circuit this year, took second. The 1'25 Intermediates finally bid farewell to tenacious Mike Bell (Hon) in that class. For the past two months he has dominated the ranks, and with tonight's sweep, earned enough points to transfer to the Experts. Warren Reid (Hon) was second after some hard racing. ' Kirk Bennett (Suz) won his fourth Intermediate in the 250's and Carl Gazafy (Mai) took the 1>OO's only his second as an Intermediate this year. protested later for riding a 250 and was disqualified, moving Bryan Dodge (Hus) up a notch to third.. Chuck Lunde (Hon) and Nelson Whitehill (Hus) really put on the show in the 125 Experts. Chuck was victorious in the first moto, but only after Nelson badgered him all the way and darn near pulled it ou t. The hassle continued into the second moto, but this time their positions were reversed and Lunde tried the last-few-turns passing act but was denied. In their finale, Whitehill streaked off the line, holding the lead; it didn't last long. Lunde squirted by quickly and built up a fair lead of about 30 yards by the end of three laps. Then, Whitehill started coming back and, closed to within a half a bike length as he whipped around the east side of the final tour. Then, in his haste, Whitehill lost traction,' almost slid out and that gave Lunde the win by 30 yards. Meanwhile, in the battle for the points, Randy Myers (BuI) took second place in the 250's for the second time this week and 15th time this year. Topping the class was the hot one, Jeff Vidic (Mai) who had his sweep spoiled by John Atwood (Bul), who took third overall. John earlier gave a frantic chase after Chuck Lunde in the King of the Hill only to lose by a few feet. Tough Intermediate clashes went to Dave Taylor (Yam) in the 125's, Mike Huhn (Hon) over double-moto winner Skip Keeley (Mai) in the 250's, and Rick WeIch (Yam) in the 500's. Joe Aragon (Yam) was the only 100 Intermediate entered. Topping the 18-rider Mini class was Vince Van Hook (Yam) with his sweep quelled by second overall Doug Nicol '(Hon). Kevin Dick (Yam) chased the leaders in all three 100 Junior events, but still took the overall from Bob Evans (Hod), the first moto winner. Bob Hewitt (Mai) scored on a second, third and first to take the 500's with Pat Hampton (Bul) wedging his way into second. ' Final event winners were Mark Ruel",s (Suz) in the 125's and Rick Beeson (Yam) in the 250's. CMC at Irwindale CARLSBAD, CAL., SEPT. 30 IRWINDALE, CAL.,. Box 846 Smyrna, GA 30080 (404) 432-9301 It had to have been the greatest night, ()verall, of motocross racing evc:r at Irwindale Raceway. Every class, just about every moto, went down to the wire, often times bringing the Short-sleeved crowd to its feet; warm weather and hot racing. Bob Messer (Mai) brought his nighttime win streak to four but only through the grace of Joe Johnston (Mai). Seventeen-year-old Joe, has never won a CMC pro event overall although he's come very close at times with a few moto wins. Tonight he won the first and third motos but an error while leading the second cost him. Tucking around tum one after jumping to the point, he lost his balance and dumped it right in front of Messer and Mike Gillman (Yam). Since it was the first lap, the entire pack quickly shoved him back to last. A lap and a half later, he finally got it ref'l1'ed and underway, finishing ninth in the moto. Messer won the round, and with his other pair of seconds, took it overall, with Johnston second on points. Gillman was listed as a third, but was \ CMC at Carlsbad On the same day that Hank Aaron failed to tie Babe Ruth's home run record, Bruce McDougal kept his pace alive with his 37th victory of the season in the 1'25 Experts at Carlsbad Raceway where races were run backwards over the International course. For a long while it looked as though he wouldn't win at all. In the first moto Mark Tyer, also Penton-mounted, pulle.d out the very strong win with McDougal edging ou t Chuck Bower (Pen) for third. Then things changed for the second go-round. Tyer started off slower and ran third all the way, but up front it was Bower-doing the leading with McDougal again ,pushing him. Then, late in the race, Bruce unintentionally banged Chuck and sent him down, taking over the lead and putting Bower back in to third overall. . "Bruce is going to have to buy me lunch for the next week because of that," Charlie joked afterwards. They both work at Mettco Penton .and are good friends, but don't be surprised if Bruce does buy lunch this weeki Rich Pinnick (CZ) won his third CMC 250 event of the year and all have come here at Carlsbad. He, too, had a little luck in the matter and after the f'l1'st moto wasn't the favorite. JeffVidie (Mai) had won round one handily. But at the start of the second he and Mark Rodman tangled before the first comer and both, went down.. Vidic rode one lap, "to make sure the bike runs all right for next week," then retired in 19th place, but fourth overall. That left Pinnick running strong with Marty Moates (Hon) pushing along in second and second overall. Third' went to Gaylon Mosier (Hon), but he might have done better had not his gearbox blown third in the f'mal moto and started producing neutrals in the other gears. In the poin ts race, Randy Myers (BuI) finished fifth 250, upping his total to 2135. Nelson Whitehill's 13th still keeps him ;n the running but Dave Eropkin was matllematically eliminated in third. Rex Staten (Mai) settled all questions as to his dominance of the 500 Experts. He won both rounds in steady fashion with Jim West running second in each. Giving credit to West, h9wever, he tried very hard in the final and cut the fl1'st moto gap quite sizably. Nels Prario (Mai) appeared to be a firm bet for third when he suddenly endoed h....d and broke his wrist, dropping him to fifth overall behind Allen Ortiz (Mai) and Mark Rodman (Yam). Three expectant Intermediates also won today. Both Dennis Crawford (Hon 125) and Jack Phillips (CZ 250) made the overall scene with a pair of wins and a second while James Russell (CZ 500) had it a bit more difficult over Clyde Ross (Yam) with their first moto acting as the decider, Russell second and Ross third. They traded wins and seconds in the other two rounds. No less than five riders scored three-for-three performances in Junior competition. It began with Sam Fitzgerald (Hon) in the Minis and ended with his brother, Frank (Hus); in the 500's. In between, Gary Denton (Yam 100) may have earned his transfer papers, Robert Fudge (Hon 125 III closed in on his and Jerry Armstrong (CZ 250 II) did likewise. Other Junior winners included Scott Pittillo (Hon) in the 125 I and Tom Hicks (CZ) in the 250 I. • P.A.L.
