Page 31 August 28,1973 the pre-course non-riders who thought they would be buying bikes when they returned home from the workshor' It was quite: impressive to see most 0 the group raise their hands, including Leroy Georges, Consul tan t in Driver Instruction, Health and Safety Unit, California State Department of Education. Talking to Georges later, I learned that a provision for classroom motorcycle training in the public schools is already in the California Administrative Code, and he is. negotiating with Assembly Speaker Bob Moretti's office on the subject of obtaining funding for lab (on the bike) training programs to be offered as an elective during the regular high school day. I picked up some ·other handy information from Marvin Detambel, program manager for the California Traffic Safety Education Task Force and another first time rider. It seems that Les White of American tHonda is on the Motorcycle Education Resources Panel for the Task Force. That in itself may not seem too extraordinary, but when you pu t it together with the facts that Les White is also president of the MIC, was vice president of the MIC last year, is a familar figure at safety conferences, and was often mentioned as' the man behind Honda support of the workshop program, it becomes a little more extraordinary. From my personal contacts I thought he was a nice guy, but this was too mach! My Bell Star is off to him. Other hot shots riding around and catching motorcycle fever included O.K. Hood, who runs a mandatory Motorcycle Defensive Driving Safety School for bike owning Marines at Camp Pendleton; Ivan J. Hilton, Teacher Preparation Director, Idaho State University; Kelvin C. Clayton, Driver Education Coordinator, Wyoming State Department of Education; Dr. Eddie Hildreth, Traffic-Safety Consultant, Southern University, Louisiana, and Ted Ching, S ta te of Hawaii Department of Education. All are biker-converts. Having passed the long phases of initial planning, the Motorcycle Industry Council Safety and Education Foundation program is now in the initial activation. stage. The program may be the private sector effort needed for so long to prevent well intended governmen tal safety regulations from being t,otally misdirected. • p\..p-S'fI C FENDERS ""E DOWNS FULL COLOR POSTERS CHICKEN LEATHERS! Monte Darling came down from Washington and Fred Moxley from Sacramento and that's a way to travel for a fun race. But then these guys remember when racing was more fun than it is today with full sponsorships and the race for the number one points. I take it back about Jim Hunter not getting on a bike. S10 95 By Maureen Lee race depending on their choice_ Last year the annual run was formed because the Burton's had been burned out and we all wan ted to do something to help them get on their feet again and we did. This year the turnou t wasn't quite so large because the advertising wasn't heavy enough and CN goofed up the calendar. One rider told me be would bave missed the whole thing if be hadn't read my column but a gang showed up. Just as last year the clothing reflected the ages of these riders, mostly black leathers aT, since it was a warm night, T-shirt with or without leather sleeves. One rider who I won't embarress by name has grown so portly that he'd had to split his leather coat up one side and put in a gusset of duct tape to make it fit! Darwin Ballard, an ex-District referee and Ray Bierman from the San Gabriel club elected to wear chicken farmer over-alls bu tRay's were something to see. They were made from a wildly patterened material and you could find him anytime you wanted him. Blackie Bruce came and rode and Sammy Tanner and Dick Hammer came to spectate and we think we saw Van Leeuwen l'urking in the bushes. You'd better ride next year, you two! Sam said he didn't think he could hack it. Now anytime a man like Sammy says that you know he's putting you on. Well, if you don't think our mighty single enthusiast didn't get a \ nllbing for being on a two stroke, you're wrong! He really got Qeedled bu t that's half the fun of the night and we wish they would have two of these a year instead of just one. Malcolm Smith was beau tiful in the slow race and then missed a moto and went home. Heats were divided much better this year into active and inactive riders, a pro moto and a couple of others I can't remember; too busy bench racing, but it gave everyone an even chance. There were three motos of three laps each, some riders looked like one lap was all they could take and others complained that next year they want ~ore_ The trophy presentation was a howl. Blackie Bruce was first one"up and when Gerry Burton brought out the trophies we all Ie t go with a yell. They were beautifully made but instead of a bike on top of the little stand it was the carefully cutoff back end of a horse. That of course led to much singing of that rousing old song, "Hurray for Blackie (or whoever) hurray for Blackie... " and I won't go any further as this is a family newspaper. Special trophies were given for almost every category and you can't say the Burton's were stingy with their trophies. We came home with one for Gene riding the only bike of its make, his 360 Greeves, and when he got a third in the first mo to I nearly had a coronary and people were saying, "My God, that's a Greeves." We're still around fell as and sball return. After the trophies were, given ou t then the - real fun started and conviviality started flowing (as if it hadn't been all evening but on a low scale) and for all we know there may be m ore old timers still out there reminiscing about the good old days. We need more events like this.
