They did, along with Eric Marcus, a MC
salvage operator, and when the MlC
established the Safety and Education
Foundation, Noto was one of the first
people Charley Hartman called in the
early part of 1973. Lucarelli's fame also
spread, and he organized the teaching
plan for the popular Yamaha Learn to
Ride Program.
1 attended part of a session of the
week long seminar that cames two units
of graduate extension credit for the
California State University system. The
students were state administrative
officials and educators from forty-nve
different states, and most had never
been on a bike before. When advised
before the work shop to bring a helmet
if possible, one official asked N oto,
''Why, we're not going to ride those
things, are we?"
By the time 1 arrived, every single
student was riding around on assoned
little motorcycles in a giant isolated
parking complex.

One benefit a dealer loaning bikes to
the program gets is the often complete
conversion of non-riding skeptics into
fanatical bikers, with resultant
motorcycle purchases. Lucarelli
estimates that 80% of course graduates
go out and buy bikes for their whole
family, usually at dealers that supported
the program. One middle-aged graduate
of the course never had any interest in
bikes until his wife took the course for
fun. Her enthusiasm was contagious he
