0pen/250 Expert
/
By John Ulrich
CARLSBAD, CAL., AUG. 11
Bill Shonnard took-an early lead
from the start in the Open/250
Expert combined before a sparse
showing of spect;~tors and dogs. In
less than a lap Terry Power, riding a
BSA, had moved up three places from a
poor .tart and was clo.ing on
Shonnard '. Honda Elsinore. They both
started leaving the pack far behind by
lap two, and the race between the big,
beezer and the lighter, better handling
Elsinore provided the only real thrill. of
the day. On lap four Power
overpowered Shonnard on the big
Carlsbad uphill, and .tarted pulling
away. Shonnard moved up to duel with
Power for awhile, while Steve Sullivan
on an open Maico and Frank Steiner on
a 250 CZ battled between them and the
pack, but by the end of the mota it was
Power first by 500 yards on his trick
titanium thumper.
The second 250/0pen mota, Power
blasted away from the .tart with
Shonnard right on his tail. Power's four
stroke would gain some ground when
pulling uphill, but Shonnard would
catch up on the downhill•. Sullivan ran
third, ahead of the pack, while the
Power/Shonnard fight continued out in
front. On tum three of lap .even
Shonnard got past. Power in the first
half of the tum on the inside, but when
Power saw what was happening. he
drove right past Shonnard on the
outside, regaining the lead. By lap eight
the battle was over, as gigantic blisters
from the rough course formed on
Power'. hands, cau.ing him to .Iow
enough for Shonnard to take the lead
and never give it back. Sullivan took
third.
Power and Sullivan wen t home after
the second 250/Open Expert mota,
since they were the only Open Experts
at the track. The third moto was a
_ predictable Shonnard no contest win. •

125/100 Everythings
By Scott Heidbrink
The 125 and 100 class bikes were
combined, and. in ,doing so,
Intermediate rider, Gary Faxon,
won all three. The last time I saw
Faxon was two years ago on a CZ, and
he .till .eem. to get faste! each year.
Today, he pulled a half lap lead in every
mota. In the second, he had a little
trouble trying to win when he fell in the
frrst tum, and was down over half a lap
when he got up. But by the end of five
minute., he had the lead and was
stretching it out by the minute. Gary
won the overall, with Mike Lahoe top
Novice, and Dave Gerig top Beginner. •

TUSTIN, CAL., AUG 12
AMC is now using OCIR, the
popular nigh t racing track, as a
day time one, and for a switch,
almost all the riders like it. Their
m'lior complaints being that it was too
.hort, and there was virtually no place
to pas.. Other than these two gripes,
which can be changed simply by moving
the fence. back, everyone had a neat
day. The track, which. is kept tacky by
mean. of a chemical process, .tayed the
way it was .upposed to most of the day,
with little dust.
The Expert classes had to run
together. The top honcho of the day
was Larry McCarty on a flying 2 SO Bul
'SaDf In all three mota. McCarty really
put .t to the troops, never having to eat
anybody else'. dust. While 011 t in fran t,
McCarty ju.t loved to pop wheeliea,
cross .it up, and do all the other neat
stuff riders. do when they are in the
lead. The .econd 250, overall, was
CM-reguIar, Toby Taki, on hi. VR
Monte.a. Alway. nrnning in the top fIVe
was 125 rider, Dave Miller, on a very
potent Suzuki. Behind Miller in that
class was Rick Bean, on the other
Japanese wonder, the _Honda. Ted
Metzger appeared to have the Open
Expert win in the bag, by winning the
first two. But the third was hi. demise,
as he had trouble, and ended in last.
Carl Gazafy finished a con.i.tent.econd
place in all three matos, which gave him
the win, and the top cash for. the clas•.
Another CMC-reguIar, Clyde Ross,
decided to trade in his 380 Chey Zavord
a few week. ago, and .pring $1800
worth for a new scooter. Of counel' it
was a YZ Yammie, and a 360 no leu.
Well, Clyde looks much smoother, and
faster on his new ride, and in looking.o
smooth, he swept all three of his matos,

500 Intermediate, with Jim Beltink
bring th.e only one to give him trouble,
and that was in the second mota. Other
than that Clyde made it look easy.
Second Intermediate was Tim Morgan,
with Jim fmishing third.
Even though the.e guys were not in
the lead in the combined Open class,
they .till had quite a good duel within
the motos. Tops in the first malo was a
Honda rider, mistakenly entered in the
Open class. But Dave Blosser won the
second, flUS taking top Junior honors
ahead a Dave Orozco. Clyde led the
Opens in the frrst and third motos.
Billy Glore took top trophy in the
125 Intermediates. ln doing so he won
two matos, and was second in the last.
Second overall was Freda "Cycle
House" Rodi1, with an unusual bit of
bad luck. The f....t mota, Freda didn't
get a good start, and had to work, and
he did, into second. But the .econd was
a mess, with a bad .tart, he had to work
htIrd, and he just couldn't seem to pass
anyone, .0 he cooled it. Bu t the last one
was his glory, as he smoked 'em and
won it, thus capturing second overall.
Dan Williams was third, _with Freda'.
brother, Cesar fourth.
