California 92801 Let them eat lobster by Terry Handelin When my brother told me that there was someone on the phone who wanted to talk to me about my BSA 500, I thought it was the loan company for sure. As I picked up the receiver, I was trying to think of a good reason for being behind six paymen Is, but as soon as I heard that sweet sounding voice I knew this was no loan company calling. "Is this the owner of the BSA 500 single cylinder four stroke motorcycle?" "Yeah, this is me." "Well I'm taking a survey of BSA 500 owners and I wonder if you have a few free minutes to answer a few questions?" "Sure, I guess so. I'm waiting to see if a tire I just fixed leaks anyway." "First, tell me what do you use your BSA 500 for?" "Oh, just about everything: street riding, cow trailing, racing, and it works pretty good for exercising my right leg." "And why did you choose a four stroke over a two stroke?" .. 'Cause it sounded nice, had good power, and I thought it was going to be reliable. " "And have you been satisfled with your BSA 500 as far as reliability is concerned ?" "Well right now it doesn't make any sound or power because it's in the shop with a blown engine." "And have you recommended BSA 500 to any of.your friends?" "No, but to some afmy enemies." 'ow, taking everything into consideration would you say you have been, 'completely sa tis fled, somewhat satisfled, or unsatisfied' with your BSA 500?" "I would say I have been somewhat unsatisfied. " "I'm sorry that that is not one of the choices they have here." "Who has where? Just who is sponsoring this survey and how come?" "Well I don't know who is sponsoring the survey, but it seems a motorcycle company is trying to find out if there is a market for a 500cc single cylinder four stroke motorcycle. And now if you'll just tell me what kind of motorcycles you had before you bought the BSA 500?" "Well, let's see, I had an OSSA 250, that's O-S-S-A and I had a Kawasaki 175, that's K-A-W ... " "Oh, that's OK, I know how to spell Kawasaki. Now please tell me, would you consider buying another BSA 500?" . "Well I don't know about that, but I would like to know which company is thinking of com.ing out with another 500 single cylinder four stroke?" "Look, all I know is that I'm paid two dollars an hour to call up all the BSA 500 owners in the USA and ask them these questions, and, remember, I'm the interviewer and you are the interviewee! " "Yeah OK, but at two dollars an hour, it's going to cost more for the phone bill than it will cost to pay you. Where are you calling from, by the way?" "Santa Ana." "Santa Ana, that's where Kawasaki has their research and development facility, and adding that to the fact that you knew how to spell Kawasaki, I would say that Kawasaki is the company that is thinking of coming out with this 500cc single cylinder four stroke, Right?" . "Look, I'm telling you, I just got in from Iowa, took this part time job and I don'r know what in the hell you're talking abou t. " "YOUJC pretty slick, but I read 'The Latest Poop' and know all about Kawasaki's secret 500cc single cylinder four stroke." "The latest poop, sir? Is this an obscene phone call?" , UNo, you know, Papa Wealey?" "Papa Wealey, what's that? Sounds lilte a breakfast cereal." "Well maybe you don't know anything. Let's ge.t back to the questions. " "OK, there's just one or two more anyway. Ah, are you going to buy a motorcycle in the next year and if so which one? And what does BSA stand for?" "I'm not sure but I think BSA stands for Bastard Stopped Again. and I was thinking of buying one of those new Honda 350cc single cylinder four strokes that are coming out soon." "I see. Why would you choose the Honda over the BSA?" "Well I haven't had much luck with the BSA and there are lots of Honda dealers around SO I could get a good deal and it would be easier to get parts, too." "I guess BSA parts are hard to get huh?" "KInda, and when you own a BSA you need lots of parts." "Well that just about wraps it up,just one more thing, the loan company asked me to tell you that you 'are six months behind in payments and that they will be there on Monday to repossess 'their' BSA 500cc single cylinder four stroke. Shall I give them a message?" "CLICK!" (Note: This article was based on an tU:tual phone conversation, but what with Watergate and everything I didn't dare tape record the thing, so so'!'e of the details might be a little fuzzy, but you can bet your leaky Amal that someone is interested in marketing a 500" .single cylinder. four stroke. So all you BSA 500 owners get ready for what may prove to be!Jn interesting phone call. Don't worry. It isn't the loan company.) Top American award defined by AMA Executive Committee WESTERVILLE, OHIO With the concern that FIM licensing procedures may become exploited by international riders relocating their country of residence on a frequent basis,' the Executive Committe of the AMA has placed a stricter definition on awards and contingencies allocated for "Top American" perfonnance. According to international licensing procedures as ou tJined by the statu tes of the FIM, a rider is issued his international license through his declared nation of residence and is considered a rider of that nation. An example would be road racer Jack Findlay of New Zealand who lives in France, is licensed through the French federation and is thereby considered a French rider. While allowing that this procedure is good for rider exchange and the international growth of the sport, the AMA Execu tive Committee has attempted to follow the spirit of the ru I e by establishing that all contingencies and trophies posted for the "Top American" in international events will be awarded to the top rider holding United States citizenship or citizenship in the North American Zone as defined by the FIM. The North American Zone includes Mexico, the United States and Canada. Presently, there are riders in the United tate with AMA issued licenses who are citizens of other na tions.
