. l III M ..... Jim Pomeroy was the first American in the 250 Summer Series on his Pursang. Once again proving the overall performance and dependability of .Bultaco. '" ~ <{ '" ;: w 2 w ..J U > U Rex Barris leads the Expert rush into the first turn. Friday nights in By Marty Gregory The folks at the Owyhee Motorcycle Club in Boise, Idaho have it all figured out. Have the weekly ,motocross on FTiday evening and give everyone the entire weekend to do their camping, boating, trailriding thing! Beginning at 7: 00 p.m. every Friday during the summer, the Boise motocross events' get the needed (Ya Gotta Do It!) racing out of one's blood early and leaving the balance of the weekend free for more leisurely pursuits. The racing itself, however, is hardly leisurely! By running only six laps per moto, the action is kept fast and furious, and the starts are something that has to be seen to be believed! While those Expert class tigers can ride full throttle for six laps, the shorter races also allow the semi-serious weekend warrior to do his racing thing against. his buddies without having to be in top shape. This works out very well for those of us who ride a desk all week and really don't have the time to get into the kind ef shape needed for serious rae:ing. The 125 and 250 Expert classes are really the ones to watch for action. Guys like Randy Lee, Tim Gaskell, ~oise Leon Sackman and Dan Gearing are usually out front and charging hard with the rest of the pack not far behind. The Open class is normally donrinated by Boise's number one plate, Vic Greenfield, on his B.rad Lac k e y-A u tograph-Model-Kawie wi th UTI" Tommy Sawyer and Bruce Harris providing the necessary wheel pushing into the comers. The Beginners keep the spectators amused with the usual display of eagerness and such famous stunts as Flying W's, Dogpile On The Leader, and the very-popular Snowfence Surprise! Injuries of a serious nature are few and far between at Boise and the course is modified to eliminate danger spots as they become well known. The basic theme of the Friday evening races is fun with a capital "F!" Some of the racers come over a hundred miles every week just to race for 12 laps and' maybe a trophy. The 1:leer wagon does a booming business and the grits stand sells mucho burgers. The 100 to 150 riders who show up every Friday sometimes win, sometimes just get frustrated but nearly always go home feeling on top of the world and ready for a fun-filled weekend. Racing on Friday evening gets one's head together nicely after five days of work and all·in-all provides a genuine service to those who ride for fun as well as those who ride to win.
