The instructions that come with the
device go in to much detail about
calibrating your speedometer and
finding the error factor. Then, by
sending in the error factor to Bonar,
they will send you a calibrated disk
compensating for your error factor (for
a fee). I feel this is an unnecessary step.
It doesn't matter if your speedometer is
accurate to one inch in fIYe miles if the
speedometer being used by the
promo ting club is differen t. You will
have to compensate for their error
anyway. Skip this step. Paul Bonar
disagrees with me but that's my
opinion.
You can run just about any MPH
average anyone can think of with this
device. However, I feel that the
manufacturers have cluttered it up with
too many MPH averages. If they would
stick to the commonly used enduro
speeds, they could make the disk much
easier to read. Also the popular six
through 36 MPH averages are on the
outer edge of the disk. It is hard to line
up t!le watch minute hand when riding
since there is over an inch or two
between the minute hand and the
mileage indicators. Reversing the
placement of the six through 36 MPH'
-averages to the inside would make it
much easier to read.
But on to the main question. Does
the Dial-A·Enduro work? Yes it does.
On the Red Garter, while learning to use
the device and experimen ting, I was
never more than a minute off at a check
and zeroed quite a few. For the fust
time out with the device, I was pleased.
I felt it had good potential. The next
chance I got to use it was at the
Greenhorn 500 mile National enduro. A
faulty watch the frrst day kept me from
using it, and I was doing okay Sunday,
after changing watches, when the hose
clamp holding the device broke and the
Dial-A-Enduro went flying off the road.
I lost about five minutes looking for all
the parts and really had to hustle to get
back on time as I was in a 36 MPH
section at the time. Luckily there
weren't any checks for awhile. Needless
to say, I wasn't too happy with the way
it was moun ted. I don't know if this is a
common weakness or just a fluke but it
did happen on mine.
The Dial-A·Enduro is very close to
being in the ballpark. For a novice
enduro rider it will work pretry well as
is. For the more experienced
timekeeper, a few minor modifications
and it could be easily one of the best
timekeeping devices in the desert.
Simplicity is the· key to having a good
reliable timekeeping system.
The Dial-A-Enduro retails for $29.95
plus $1 shipping from Bonar
