June 16 - Sr. Milton Castellanos E~rardo. Governor of the State of Bl\ia California, announced the formation of "El Comite de Promociones Turisticas. A.C." to handle and promote any and all sports events in the State of B'lia and Baja Territory. This committee to be known as the Baja Sports Committee will be the official promoter of the upcoming Ensenada 300 to be held August 25, 1973. The government of Baja felt that NORRA, who in the past has promoted all such cvcnts, has done an excellent job, but that profits were being taken out of their country and they were left with the problems. U.S. promoters were not totally aware of how to get all the political doors open in order to help entrants and a great many problems have been left unsolved, causing trouble in Mexko as weD as the United States. Mexican go~rnmcnt also feels that, by con trolling the races, they will be able to bring pressure to bear on local businesses that have sometimes in the past overcharged for hotels, food, etc. Property owners in Baja have not been asked by NORRA about allowing the races across their land. and the U.S. promoters go home and leave the local go~mment with these and other problems to handle. The Sports Committee will pay 50 percent of the entry fees. increase local ad~rtising, and will be getting more local support for companies in Baja, but also indicated that they hope that U.S. companies who have offered contingency monies in the past will continue to do so. AU net profits from the races will be donated to a charity for the children and youth of Baja California administrated by the Governor's wife. More Bikes Sou~t Bill Martin. of the Baja Racing Association says that he hopes more motorcycles will participate, as they arc going to pay by entries into a class, and they arc staying off the pavement, which should give motorcycles the chance to be the overall winners as well as class winners. They hope to have U.S. clubs and promoters again ir'volved in smaller motorcycle races and will be there to help them and advise. The Baja Sports Commitee, in cooperation with the Baja Racing Association (B RAJ, another Mexican organization, will be paying larger shares to the purse. In the Ensenada 300 coming up there will be three motorcycle classes: 125cc, 25Occ, and Open. The entry fcc will be $200 plus 55 insurance per entry plus $10 per c.ontestant for Baja Racing Association membership. This membership. fee will go into the Championship fund and the membership will be good for all BRA races for the year. Of the $200 entry fee. $120 less 10 percent will be paid back t<> the racers in the class from which it came. The 10 pereen t will go to the' o~raD winner. (Last year's winner was a bike.) Now the classes will pay hy the number entered. if there are 10 entries in a class they will pay $530. 5350 and 5200 for first. second and third. In a class with 20 entries they will pay first place $ 760 on down to fifth place's 5200. In the case of a ~ry large class with. say. 40 entries. they Will pay fmt place 51120 down to seventh place at $200. Add the 10 percent off the top of purse to first-in-class money and you have ",oney worth going after. 1973 Ensenda 300 Off·Road Race The second race of the 1973 Bl\ia Championships and Bl\ia Manufacturers Trophy Series will be the Ensenada 300 on August 25th.
