Wernecke,' boss of the Wer Necke factory and a past motocross rider, is building a new track engine to replace the old long stroke J.A.P. 80x99, and the short stroke ESO 88x92 witb his middle stroke 84x90 engine. The J.A.P. is the only way to go on the big dirt and grass tracks where its long stroke out torques the short stroke ESO. But on the short quarter mile speedways, the ESO's short stroke means faster RPM pick up, does it to the J.A.P. • Fred Drrosch, designer of the engine, settled on the 84x90 for several reasons. It's shorter than the J.A.P., getting the weigh t lower. The use of magnesium for the engine cases, cocker boxes and side case plus aluminum for the head and barrel make it much lighter then the ESO (13 Il'>s. lighter). The engine is fitted with a 35mm Dellorto carb at present. Engine puts out 57 DIN horsepower, while the ESO has 52 and the J.A.P. 45. Not only does the Wer Necke DR 500 put out more power and weigh less, parts should be easier to get. The large West German factory also makes parts for the F-104 Starfighter. Then you have the Czech ESO made by Jawa. Thjs bike will always be 'a problem for parts. Mr. Wernecke told me that for every engine built, there will be enough spare parts made to build two more. His engine uses a Bosch M.H.T.C. pointless ignition (magnetic high tension condenser) which is foolproof. The carb is on a 28 degree downdraft. more than any other engine. The oil system is total loss . like the J.A.P. and ESO but uses a Wernecke duplex piston pump. Compression ratio is 14 to I and like all track engines methanal is the go juice. Yalve springs are a new type hair pin much different then those used on other engines. The crank runs on roller bearings as does the rod, and the twin cams run on ball bearings. This is needed as the engine wil! rev to 8000 RPM. Manfred Poschenrieder. ace German dirt tracker, is doing all the track testing. I saw him take a second place at the Herxheim Half-mile on the DR 500 after a very bad start, about tenth into the first turn. Track racing is only four laps and super fast. Much faster than stateside half-mile, so to take second after a bad start, you really have to be flying. Manfred also has been second to Ivan Mauger the last two years in the world dirt track championship. Look for one of these engines in Southern California very soon. It should be the coming thing.
