by Howie Fowler GARDENA, CAL., July 13 - Friday the thirteen th means a lot of things to a lot of people, to a select few Novices in tonight's program it meant their first time to bail, at Ascot. Thanks to the now ever presen t hay bales and the rider's abili ty to keep their heads together, no one was injured seriously and Ascot's ran an eleventh event program of injury free racing. In the first of five Novice heats Skip Askland won out over Chuck Soderstrom and Chuck North. Heat number two was won by Bruce Hanlon. Heat three wen t to Marc Barbani over Pat Evans and Denny Briggs. Heat number four, the fastest of the five, was won by Ron Tobey over the Honda of Dave Racine. In heat five Scott Marshall took win over Mark Revels and Jack Langston. After his second 'consecutive win last Friday night, DeWayne Keeter was back to try for three in a row as he set fast Expert qualifying time of 22.83. Second Fastest was Larry Gino with third fastest time going to Junior Rex Barratt and the last man to make the dash was John Sperry. The first Jr/Ex. heat was won by none other than Keet~:r followed by Denny Kanagae, Devon Sowell, Bob Sanders and Tony Dell. The second heat was won by Danny Hockie with Larry Gino running second, followed by Mike Renslow, Mike Clark and Charlie Thielke. Heat number three went to Rex Barratt with Paul Conserrerie nabbing second followed by John Sperry and Chuck Hart. In the Novice Semi and their last chance t6 make the main it was Chuck Soderstrom winninjt followed by the .. M ASCOT M ,... en ... DeWayne Keeter pulled off the win and the bUCKS with Rex Barrall • running second after Larry Gino missed a shift at the starting line. Alternate Hockie bailed off in the North tum On the final lap without injury and grabbed fourth in the Dash. Ten Novices with a common desire, an,Ascot Main Event win, then lined up for the lovice Main with the winner Ron Tobey silting on the pole. econd was picked off by Skip Aksland, third to Marc Barbam and fourth to Chuck Soderstrom. In the Jr./Ex. Main it was DeWayne Keeter leading into tum one with Danny Hockie out to save face after his little altercation with the North turn running a close second. Down the back ch u te Hockie passed Keeter started to regajn some of the ground lost to Hackie and by lap eleven it was a new race as Keeter started to pull within striking distance of Hockie. Meanwrule "Barratt, Gino and RensJow were all about evenly spaced from each other trying their best to catch each other, while at Ibe same time gaining ground on Hockie and Keeter. When the white flag came out it was wheel-to·wheel for first and second with Hockie taking Keeter into the last lap. All those spectators who left on lap five are by now on their way home and are missing what they pa;d to see... RACING. Down the back chute and headed for the checkered flag Keeter is twisting his throttle for all its worth. both riders are charging intQ the North tum, Hockie on the inside Keeter bot at his footpegs. Hockie gets the drive out of the tum sees that beautiful checkered flag and grabs the win, Keeter and his Harley nab second, and the Ascot poin ts lead. Rex 'Barratt took third ahead of Larry Gino, Mike RensJow, and Denny Kanagae. Next Friday "The National Numbers Come Home" for the "Gardena Gold Cup" which should be an outstanding I race and Southern California's chance to see not only our own local 'alional Class C riders but also a chance to see some of the out of state pros trying for their first Ascot win. Saturday is the National IT at Ascot and word has it you can save some bucks by taking advantage of the package deal where you can see the Gardena Gold Cup AND the N alional {or about two and a half cheaper than the individual price.
