Joe Henry· dials in the corner during his try for the track record. by Patrick Neil NAPA, CAL., July 7 - Bruce Haserot set a new track record and John Cunningham won the final event to take home most of the cash at the Napa Town and Country Fairgrounds Class A Speedway Event. With 54 riders signed up on the program, the action started off at 8:00 p.m. just as it was promised in the printed program. The track was very tacky and some very fast riders including Debby J ackline dialed in their lines on the circular course. The surprise and delight of the evening was Miss J ackline's impressive second place in her fIrSt event of the evening. A very confident rider was she! Chris Willems, observing from the stands, volunteered to be a "Trophy Boy" in the event that Debby should win her next event. Sorry, but Debby blew it in the final race. Another aggressive rider tonight was Russel Powell. 1 counted three times where physical contact occurred. during his close pursuit of first place p.osition. Russell definitely is out there to win. The one lap track record event had four contenders trying to best the existing-record held by Bruce Haserot of 12.0 seconds. Over one hundred dollars had been posted for a new record. With that incentive, Gregg Rew, Joe Henry, Mike Rooney and Bruce Haserot lined up for the run. The time of 12.0 seconds was elusive for the flfst three riders. Then Haserot took off around the track. Bruce made it look easy setting a new record of 11.85 seconds and walked away with a hundred dollar smile on his face. Debbi, Jackline rode to The Scratch Main saw Joe Henry draw the pole position. RUnning against him were Barclay Trehal, John Cunningham, and Mike Rooney. When the three sections of the starting gate jumped, out came the four very fast sliders. Cunningham took the lead, while Henry jammed in the second place spot. Trehal 'parked it' into the second lap leaving Mike Rooney chasing the two leaders. After four exciting laps, John Cunningham came across the finish line in front of Joe-Henry. John Cunningham No. 70n takes his machine in for the win. second place during Event No.9. CMC North at Sunnyvale by Steve Castillo Photos by Bob Anderson SUNNYVALE, CAL., July 8 - The track at Sunnyvale was in about the best condition it ever has been. Due in part to a water truck that really did what it was supposed to, and that meant to water down the dusty track. This can really help a place like Sunnyvale. With good track conditions the racing was also first rate. One race that received a lot of attention was the 125 Seniors. Mike Amaral on board a potent new Suzuki got the jump on the field and stretched out a healthy lead for himself. Meanwhile, working up from a poor start was Ron Huffman on a Grand Prix Cycle's Monark. But the best Len Macchiarella unloaded. but finished third in the 250 Senior.
