Opening by winning the 360 short track Main at Vallejo Saturday night, he continued by taking a big one on a half-mile oval at Calistoga Sunday afternoon. Calistoga located just north of the grand old Charles Krug winery in Napa Coun ty is magnificen t in old town charm. The track at the county fair grounds is scenic against a moun tain background and with golf greens on the Infield. Sprin t car drivers who frequently race there fear it as a killer track. The comers are short with a low in height steel fence that will flip cars that hit it. Haybales protected motorcycle riders from the fence and the track Was well conditioned with water before race time to be hard and smooth and dustless. Gathered to try their short track machines on a half-mile track were 230 -riders - some of the best in the country. Fremont regulars, a Chico hot dog, Lowell Moural, and Rich Reed, the number two man from District 35 and several Ascoteers were there. To Hocking, it was another race to win though he Was in fifth spot out of the f"rrst tum in the 360 Main with Ron Ko Ie leading Jerry Kole, Manuel Crummett, Rick Reed and then Hocking, Bob Scally and Manuel Daton. On the ~ec;.ond lap, Hocking and Ron Kole were in a dice for f"ITst. The third time around, Ron Kole broke into one ... Quigley for first in the 200 Novice Main. In the 360 Novice final, Ron Nunnes moved up late in the race to win. Steve Lammers passed David Kerwin for his win in the 250 Novice final. Young PLACERVILLE, CAL., June 29 - With 10 many of the riders away for Mammoth Mountain tonight, races were primarely for the Novices and Juniors. All the Experts except for a very few went on their ways to fame and fortune. This Was our last in the f"tnt round of races, and it really seemed sad with almost no Expert riders present The only Expert class that Was of any size was the 250 Expert class. The event Was won by a brand new Expert of one week, Kim Reeg. Kim finished second in the first round behind the powerful Suzuki of Jon Boyette, but when the second and decision making round started it was Kim Reeg all the way from start to f"mish. J on Boyette did the big thing in the 125 Expert class by winning both motos. His only competition came from the Juniors in the combined class. Finishing second overall was Paul Hamel. Ken Vanderhoof (CZ) out-tan all the Open bikes competition in each all-Novice moto and really made it look easy. His closest rival came from Pat Sutton (CZ). Another battle royal that developed Was in the 125 Novice Division n event. Ken V oet and Greg Martz battled neck and neck in each moto but it was Vaet (Mnk) that took top honon. Greg settled for lecond.
