Racing at the Sonoma-Marin Fair S tory and Photos by J ames Bramm er PETAL UMA, CAL., June 24 - Short Track riders ran the fulJ quarter· mile oval on the closing Sunday of the Sonoma -Marin Fair in Petalum a in a semipro fessiona l -progra m. For the -Expert s who elected to ride for money, there was an advertis ed $250 plus an entry fee kkl$·ba ck created by an addition al entry charge. Jim Coats and Jerry Kole won the feature even ts in the Expert class. Coats opened with first in the Trophy Dash where he led the first lap with Chuck Kole in second followe d by Skip AskJand and Jerry Kale. Chuck Kole failed in an attemp t to pass Coats on the outside in the second lap, bu t AskJand came through the hole left open by Kale passing and leading Coats briefly in the second lap. Coats recover ed the lead in the foUowin g comer and then in the . third lap Skip Askland went end over end as he opened to pass Coats a~ain coming on in the back straight . Jerry Kale finished second with Chuck getting third. AskJand was due up immedi ately on the starting line for the 360 final. With a few swift kicks here and there to his CZ by pi tmen and Askland was ready for the 360 start. Off the line was winner, Jerry Kole followe d shortly by Dennis Robinso n, Chuck Kole, Roy Toboad a, Kelly McIsaac , and then second place finisher , Skip Askland . On the second lap, Askland Was beside Robinso n trying for second on the outside but opening a hole that slipped him back in the pack as Robinso n pulled away. Robinso n lost a chain while running in second midway in the race. Ron Kole diced with Kelly Mcisaac briefly in moving up to second spot left by Robinso n's misfort une. Askland again passed Ron Kole for second and set the pace for pretty slides on the rough, hard clay surface as the two .raced closely in second and third place to the finish. The 250 Expert class was a promot er's delight with two local riders from separate Petalum a shops winning first and second. Winoer Jim Coats took the lead from Larry Drew on the fITS t lap. Foxy Drew closely followe d Coats through out the race, but an ppportu nity to pass in the closing laps was not there. A membe r of the Kole clan, Chuck was in for third while Kirk Tardiff and Wade Boyd raced for the next spots. John Neuenb urg has taken the fun out of watchin g the 250 Novice class with his apparen tly easy wins. Mike Tripp passed Gary Montgo mery for second in that class. The 200 Junior class is still interest ing, if not wild. Fred Poli took first in that final by passing Ed Souza. With the Fair closed, the weekly Friday night race program returns to the Sonom a-Mari n Fairgro unds with scrambl es the first Friday night of each month and sportsm an short track on the others. / No matter what kind of carrier you use for your bike or bikes, the all new Yamatn:!
