Because the majority of Oregon's public lands are federal, it is felt that any state regulation> should coincIde with the new federal guidelines, broughl about as a resull of Execu.ive Order 11644. 1 hese guidelines would permit u in all areas except where posted closed. The Oregon Bill ","ould require just the opposite, thus placing them in direct conniet with regulation, which will govern the majorily of public land in th at state. It is urgendy requested that interested perons contact their legislators and inform them of the conflict and personal hardship this type of legislation will place on their ability 1.0 participate in a legitimate recreational outlet. June 22; FREMONT, CAL., June 2~ - Mark Smith and Steve Eklund were Ihe two bedazzled scramblers for this weekend and with Smjth's consistency, he is pulling away with the black plate point run with relative ease. In two nights of racing he won both 125 Expert runs on his DKW and won the 250 Expert Majn at Fremont a' urday nigh t, with a second behind Eklund Friday night al Lodi. Eklund was second in the 500 Expert behind the controversial Carl Rodrick 350 Honda. The controversy to be over for awhile though, as Rodrick pUI the rod through the bollom of the cases whjle leading the 35.0 Expert heal. While in the process of dumping all the oil th rough the. urns and laking twO riders down with him, he proved the value of his Champion frame by staying on the right side of the machine until it was slow enough to safely low·side. Eklund's Saturday night effort was a thjrd in the 250 run and a second in the 500 behind last year's Fremont champ, Jerry Kole. Eklund has made great strides in the past few weeks and is quickly moving to the tOP of the Black Plate list. All the while, though Mike VanLienden is stilJ the king of the 650 Experts and he won both 650 runs. Friday night's lightweight events were the best of the two 'Yith the combined 100-125 Junior a real goody. Jeff Stadel won over Don Clayton but not before both had to deal with Jona Smith, the younger sisler of Mark. And she was on a 100 while the boys were riding 125's. Another young lady that is doing her fajr share of brass winning is Cheryl Vestal. The daughter of the short track steward wears a cut down set of Dick Mann leathers and rides well enough to trophy. With that kid Pietruskiewicz still winning the 1-00 Novice, it's still a thriller. .saturday nighr saw the lightweights go back to separation and Hank Souza won the 100 Junior over Steve w;lIiamson while the girls wdn't fare so well. -tn the 100 avice, it was Ronnie Stout the winner over Dennis "Veir who took his second second in two nights. With Stout and Pietruskiewicz about to turn Junior, he may well inherit that class. Hocking Hustles JO Series Opener by Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., June 20 - Rick Hocking is still the kid to beat al Fremont Raceway's quarter mjle oval short tr»ck. The opener of the II Wednesday night JO (for Jim Odom) series saw some new and different routines and with the addition of the mjni-bike set, the series is going to be a real goody. All the stuff that has made Rick Hocking as good as he is can be seen in the likes of Mike Fruzen, Randy Mamola and Ricky Baptista. All three are winners on the small stuff, but will be counted very well when the· time comes. The series is the AMA Class-6 allowing 360. singles on the short track. I t separates them from the 250's and so the spectator can see two super fasl Expert main events in one show Hocking had to work through the pack on the first lap but by- the end of that first one, he had gotten by Phil Cancilla's Kawasaki and by the end of the 10 laps, the Champion race frame 360. Yamaha was a half a lap ahead. Takmg the second and third were the Kole brothers, Ron and Jerry, both on similar bikes with Skip Aksland riding a Ken Roberts prepared Yamaha, his Ascot TT motor. The 25l) had Dana Perri lead the first lap, but a recent busted collarbone put him back to seventh by the end of that 10 lappet. McCaul took the lead on the second lap and stretched it over Chuck Kole. Scott Pearson made it all look easy once agajn on his Sam Arena Kawasaki in the 360 Junior. He should join the Expert ran ks soon. Action at the Fremont Marathon.
