AMC MX Saddleback by Scott Heidbrink IRVINE, CAL., June 24 - Well, the American Motocross Club decided to throw a race today, but it seems that either they forgot to tell everybody. or their riders appear to Ii ke seeing the European hotshoes fly through the slickest of tracks. With around fifty riders. all racing was over by II: 30, leaving the riders just enough time to boogie on down to the World Championship. But even though the big, ex<:use me, the B-I-G experts were down south doing their thing, a couple decided to try their luck at Saddleback. The bot rider of the day turned out to be the ole fireman himself. Chuck "Feets" Minter, on his Underwood and Lebard BSA. Tbis is one of the few times that Feets has not ridden with the Europeans while they bave been on the continent. As a matter of fact, Feets was one of the first Americans to ride against the Europeans, and he always seems to finish in the money. Today was no different, with most of his competition coming from the young speedster, Jeff Szueber. A couple of weeks ago. I reported the Jeff, was cleaning up on a YZ Yammie. and it turned out to be a stock bike except for a YZ tank. This week, it seems that Jeff's sponsor pooled his money, and bough t one of the new, exclusive YZ moto machines, and this was Jeff's first outing. He really seemed pleased with his new mount. Steve Gannon took his Penton to the win in the 125 Expert class, pursued by Ken Ehlers on his Hooskie, and Ross Maeda on a Bull. Ron Didonato rode his Montesa VR to the win in the 250 Intermediates, while Joel Grant put his 'Taco in to second, and Steve Sobodos grabbed third on his Honda. THE WASHINGTON FOLLIES by Chuck Clayton So the agency of the federal government charged with protecting the environment has decided that motorcycles are beyond redemption and, in the interest of clean air, they have to go. What nonsense! The Environmen tal Protection Agency's June 15 proposals would make a hilarious skit if they were not put forth so seriously by a tax-supported hureau: "We've got an energy crisis and a smog problem, chief! What do we do?" "Easy. Let's ration gasoline. Hatch two birds from one egg, ecologically speaking. " "Chief, that's brilliant. Only what if everyone starts driving motorcycles? I hear they get a hundred miles to the gallon. " "Well, then let's ration motorcycles, too. " "Chief, you're too much. Oh. by the way, the chauffer's here with your govemm~nt-sponsored limousine." "I'U be a few more minutes. Tell 'im just leave the engine running." * * * Fortunately, the Motorcycle Industry Council is taking the EPA's folly seriously, but MIC (K-E·Y, M-O-V-etc.) is not without its cap of bells and tassels. EP'A dumped on the inudstry at a time when MIC had no public relations person on the staff, so perhaps they can be forgiven for throwing away the opportunity to make hay with the publicity windfall EPA just handed them. It's not as if they recognjze the opportuni ty and failed to take advantage of it. But how the industry could have failed to communicate with EPA when it had this huge investment in clean-air technology boggles the mind. I realize that MlC is only three years old and can't be expected to cover everything with its measly budget. But I think it is high time this inudstry grew up' and faced its responsibiJj ties. ''The boil that broke...has been festering three years," was the way one MlC engineer described it.
