~ GOOEY GRAHAM TI' • l ... ... ~ .... > 'S ... ~ au ~ ..J ~ o by Pennie Doutt GRAHAM, WASH., June 15 - The Novice beats were run first with brothers DarreU (Oss) and Duane Hendrickson (Kaw) putting on quite a show in the first heat. .DarreU took the lead and a battle for first between DarreU & Duane was on with the lead changing back and forth several times before Duane took over the lead and Darrell settled down to take second. Bill Larson wen t all the way in the second heat. Koler·Kanestanaux (Hon) won the third on a Honda. The fourth beat was won by Randy Scism (Hon). Brad Tibbetts, John Hartman, and Claude His1ip took Junior beats. The flJ"st Expert Heat caught Randy Skivc:r asleep at the start wben the flag dropped. The staner caUed for a restart and tried to put everyone but Skiver on the back row. Skiver wasn't going to bave any of that and was going to start on the back row with the rest, ignoring the attempts by the ref to get him to go 'up to the front row. As far as Skiver was concerned, it was going to be a fair and even stan for everyone, no matter what row they started from, so fmally the ref had no other choice lnat to start everyone on the first row. The fans went wild at the show of good sportsmanship on Skiver's pan. On the re-stan, Skiver was ready and grabbed the lead with Jim Einarsson in a close second, pressing Skiver aU the way to the fmisb. Skiver won with Einarsson second, Dan Mangano third. Steve Baker took the lead in the second beat and went aU the way to win with George Leonard second and Don Noble third. . Tbe Novice Trophy Dash saw Duane Hendrickson take the lead, holding Randy Scism and Koler Kanestanaux off to win the Dash. Charlie grown (Tri) won the Junior Trophy Dash. As the Expert Trophy Dash got under way, it began to sprinkle. Randy Skiver (Tri), Don Noble (Tri), Jim Einarsson !Tri) and Steve Baker (Yam) aU staned In the Dash with Skiver in the lead and Baker second. Einarsson was rurming third and Noble fourth. The sprinkle turned in to a beavy rain faU and was reaUy making the track 'gooey' when Einarsson pulled off the track, then Noble, leaving the race to> Skiver and Baker who fmished one two respectfully. ' , The track was determined unsafe for any further racing and everyone made a mad dash for their cars and vans. Tbat's the way it goes in the Pacific Northwest. Rainier Spring MX Series Final Qualifying Race by Jan Newman BEND, ORE., June 10 Randy Limbeck took the lion's share of the long green for today and became the poin t leader of the twen ty Open Experts who bave qualified for the Main Event of the Rainier Spring MX Series to be run on June 24. Limbeck led off the line on his Honda in moto one and left all of the position shuffling behind him. A t the scratch Limbeck was foUowed by James Harris (Mail, Vernon Gabbert (Hon) and Doug Aiken (Hon). Midway in the race Gabbert moved in to second and Barney Newman (Mon) and Tracy Lantz (Mai) wore picking their way through from the tail end of the group. As the race ended Newman was nibbling at Harris in third and Lantz was in fifth. Lantz led to the comer in round two then came Limbeck, Newman and Gabbert. This time Harris was eighth off the line and aU his catch-up effort was in vain when he lost his chain. Limbeck went by Lantz early in the race and the battle fen to Lan tz and Newman for second. Newman finally won out and Gabbert, too, got by Lantz. The final round saw the lead go to Harris, Gabbert, Limbeck, Lantz and Newman. After a few laps of tight racing between Harris, Gabbert and Limbeck, Gabbert moved in to the lead and Limbeck took over second. Limbeck set his sights on the lead but in the pursuit be went down and Newman, now in third, and Harris went by. Limbeck managed to regain third by the Hnish and Harris dropped back to sixth.
