PDO'ON'S f ... ... '" M M > :; .., en ~ Z W ...J U > U , HARRISON, MICH., June 16-17 - No steep hills, no bottomless mudholes and a 24 mph schedule did not help 80% of the riders at the Porcupine. The tight trails filled with Jackpine, scrub and sand just wore down the majority, causing them to go over their 60 minute time allowance and be disqualified. All the leading enduro stars were on hand, save for a few like Ron Bohn who is laid up. Names like Bill Kain, Lenny Keen, the Penton brothers, Jake Fisher, John Young and Dick Burleson. The facts in running Michigan enduros are the Michigan riders themselves. Most of the Michigan boys ride the sand trails of their state like no one else can. Fellows like Lenny Keen, Bob Hartman, Dr. John Clark, the Sharphoms and numerous other Michigan stars are the ones who set the pace. Last year's winner, Grand National Champ Bill K~ was the starting favorite as he thoroughly trounced everyone last year in the 150 mile run. Two unknown factors were thrown in; however, Jack Penton was in the lineup on a 175 Jackpiner and Jack's been sweeping the Two Day Qualifiers with his super fast riding and Dick Burleson on a Husky who's been running very hot. The first day's mileage was 196 and over 80% failed to make the finish line, mainly due to running out of tlme. At the end of the day, however, the stars were all very close. Jack Penton had dropped around 35 points and he had a hot field right behind him. The second day was a repeat of the first only in reverse with a few different sections thrown in. The weather stayed a cool 60 degrees, a much more pleasant temperature than the previous day's blistering 90 degrees. At the halfway point the run really tightened up again dropping up to 20 points at checks. One rider however was dropping less than • ten at thetoughest checks. That nder w~ Jack Penton. He had his 175 Penton really moving and it was beyond a doubt who was going to win. You can never be sure until the final results, but his pace was blistering. Th-e Final results speak for themselves. Jack had put over 50 points between himself and second place man Bill Kain. A super performance that should lift Jack into the lead for the National Enduro title as he's the only rider so far this year to win two Nationals. Last year's winner Bill Kain took second overall on his Husky and Michigan speedster Lenny Keen powered his 125 'Penton to third overall. The enduro was hosted by the "A" Resuhs only: Overall Winner: Jack Penton (Pen). A Champ: Bill Kain (Hus). B Champ: H. Warren. Senior Champ: Leonard Keen (Pen). 100cc A: 1. D. Leimbach; 2. M. The course was well marked and scoring was perfect. The interesting thing was that if you were not at the start you would never know a cross country event was in progress. No upset citizens in Michigan last week. Abo",,: Jack Penton and hi< first place trophy. Right: Tight Michigan woods trails.
