Lodi/Oakdale Openers by William Spencer LODI, CAL., June 15, 1973, OAKDALE, June 16 - Mark Smith is currently leading the black plate list of top scramblers and put the lead count at 32 poin ts after wins in both the 250 and 125 Expert events at Lodi. It wasn't all that easy though. Ron Alsop led him around folC the 125 Expert heat and appeared to have all in readiness for a second win over the fastest DKW pilot around these parts, but in the main, the BuItaco ace from Pacific Grove just had all kinds of problems and didn't make it to the trophy box with mechanical ills. In the 250 Expert run, Smith aced a super hole shot and had little trouble holding the win over Ray Huff on the BuIzook while Mike Renslow stayed in the sportsmen business for a weekend and got third. Mike VanLienden beat Rick Otto once again in the 650 Expert run but not by much. Phil Vitale got 50 turned on by winning his first ever at Fremont last week that he went out and won the 350 Novice main tonight and the dif(erence was that Rick Eklund stayed up to III := w 2 w ..J (.) > (.) The Saturday nigh t operation at Oakdale was a real job and was very well run. The man to beat was Teddy Davidson with wins in both the 125 and 250, just like Smith the night before. The difference is that this is an 1/8th mile cushion short track and Mark is'hot for a big black plate while Teddy likes to ride the cushion so that those that like cushions came to the Pioneer Arena instead of going to Hayward. Once again, in the 125, it wasn't much of a contest for the win after a few laps, but the second was the same surprise as last night: Mark Ruckman came in for second on board a 100 Kawasaki. Bill Rose survived a mighty crash in the heat to return to win the 125 Novice main over AI McGehee on board his newly purchased Ray HuH Suzuki. The 10 lap 250 Expert run was- the only problem event of the night. It was getting close to closing time, the mini-bikers were itching to get their trophies and head out, the scorers were massaging hands and shivering and the racers were overly nervous. After restarts to keep everybody running and in line, Ted beat out the Ascot flash, Skip Akslanc1, and Carl Yerby on board one of the faster Honda 250 four strokes, Up to $70 Value I~ W.DN.SOA_...............
