... Bill Cook Dominates Mud by Kaiser Whilley EUGENE, ORE., Dec. 3, 1972 - .Bill Cook, who says he is getting too old for this sort of thing, nevertheless struck a blow for the over·30 jet set and was easily the outstanding rider as Eugene' Motocross kicked off the Rainier Winter. Championship Series Sunday at its track near Goshen. Cook whipped his Maico around the motocross circuit in six motos winning all but the last one and lOok first place over·all in both the 250 and Open classes. The track had just recen tJy been covered with' many truckloads of sawdust to con trol the mud and it worked super, even though it rained hard the day and night before. The bikes didn't pack with mud and the traction was good. Even the minibikes could get around the entire course. Cook, who spent much time last summer on the Inter-AMA circuit and this fal] on the Trans-AMA circuit pocketed $50 for each. of his triumphs and scored 150 points in each class toward the series point titles, )"hich will be worth $100 each to the winners. Cook's chief competition came from Ron Fujii, a 17-year-old high school senior from Troutdale, Oregon. Fujii (Mai) took the lead for two laps in the second 250 moto, with Cook leading all the way in both the' first and third motos. Fujii led more than half of the second moto in the Open class competition, before Cook took charge and won, just as he had taken over from Chuck Sun of Sherwood in the first Open moto. But Fujii was not to be denied in the final professional race oi the day. He let Sun, who got a goo'd start on his Montesa, lead for the first two laps, then powered by him and held on to " If .Q. lead for the first two laps, then powered by him and held on to take the final Open moto. I t was the first defeat at Eugene Motocross for Cook who had won 11 straigh t motos in two race meetings. "l'm... uh ... gettin' a little on in years," kidded Cook. "I'm 30 years old," he laughed, "which is ... oh, as a rule, a little old for motocross. Most of . the guys motocrossin' are kids like Rpn (Fujii) and Alex (Mauck). Anywhere from 16 to 22 years old are your most competitive riders." "I'm getting' to the age w here I like to feel secure on my motorcycle:' he concluded with a twinkle in his eye. $125 was paid out in both the 250 and Open Expert classes, and while Cook took home most of the pie, there were a few crumbs left for Fujii, Mauck and Rick Burgett, as well as for two local Experts, Keith Nerse and Chas. S tanddord. Quite a few Amateurs turned out to score series points toward some outrageous overall trophies, with Gary Heeter winning in the Open Amateur class; Gary Lebold in the 250 class; Ron Jensen in the 125; Klaus Hohman in the 100 and Greg Proden in the mini. According to the rules for the five race series, only the four best scores will be counted out of five, so riders who many have missed the first round still have a good chance. OveraJI purse for Experts pays $250 through five places in both 250 and Open classes, while there are trophies through four places for each Amateur class. The next series rounds are Jan. 7; Feb. 4, 18; and the final round, Mar. 4. Eugene Motocross holds Amateur only races every other weekend from Dec. 3 on, except for series dates.. ~·EXPERT~ TRIUMPH SUZUKI of 1049 W. TRI-SPORT TRI-WHEELERS TRY BARSTOW-TO-VEGAS Drifter's M.C. Hare Scrambles BARSTOW, CAL., Nov. 25, 1972 Tri-Sport, pioneer marque in the off road three wheel vehicle business, showed to good advantage here during the initial entry of three wheelers in the renowed Barstow-lo.Vegas Hare and Hound. Tri Sport finished the grueling endurance test taking the top five sp-0ts. None of the other 11 machines en tered in their class completed the run. Three manufacturer's makes were represented in the field. Roger Stroschein, driving for Desert Cycle, Blythe, Ca., took the number one spot followed by Don Jakaboski, Jr., driving for Barris Sport Center, EI Cajon, Ca. Both riders were _astride STS 290 models. Third across the finish line was Dennie Thurman, La Canada, Ca., driving for W.D.T. Racing Team, also aboard a STS 290. Finishing fourth W;J.S Jessie Salbato, driving for Buddah Enterprises, Riverside, Ca., piloting a TS 29 O. The fifth Tri-Sport to cross the finish tine was driven by Gary Rupp, Saugus, Ca., who was aboard a STS 290. B-Z CORNERS. WASH., Nov. 46. 1972 by Jan Newman -A couple of injuries marred the day of racing. A broken collar bone was the result of two riders going in opposite directions on the course in practice! Another rider crashed in the Open race and sustained a possible broken arm. The 2Y2 mile course is very narrow and passing is difficult under the best conditions. Throw in a few slick corners and deep puddles from Saturday's rain and it all adds up to an hour of tough riding (45 min. for 200cc and under.) Even the leaders came in with reports of sliding out on o~e or more occasions. The scrat~h is exciting here when some 25 bikes pour in to about a 4 ft. wide turn in the space of roughly 300 ft. In the 250cc class, Scott Sagor took the lead on his Suzuki ahd held it the entire race with only a brief challenge from Barney Newman riding a Montesa. Norman Brock and Gary Lande 'exchanged the lead on their Huskys (Huskies?) in the Open . .Brock finally went out in front on the last lap and held it for the win. ':)ti\1 "'/.'~-"""....
