There were more industry people on hand than racers but it still made for a very enjoyable evening. Mark was Forced to retell his life story but took it in very good grace. Over 400 people attended the affair that included state Senator Arlen Gregorio and CMIC head Tom Heininl(er. The highlight of the motorcycle social season saw many of Mark's Former sponsors in troduced by the organizer of the event, Sandy Greenblat, of Marin Motosports. The ensuing sessions, relating former races and personal anecdotes left the crowd enthralled. The evening was never dull. SelJator Gregorio was the first speaker and, with his funny story side, he related that the gas tax refund bill that he introduced in the senate last year has been passed recently and the Governor s"'ould sign it soon, making it possible to recover monies spen t on gas that was used For off-road vehicles. M ark is rapidly becoming an accomplished speaker and, at any event in the coming year, will not bave to worry about things to talk about. The very personable young champion was well received by all and was given more than one standing ovation. AMA pro director Bill Boyce took over the show about three-quarters of the way through the evening and flattened everybody with his presen tations. Amongst the goodies that he delivered was a grandiose poin t fund check for better than, gulp, $11,000. Mark received a trophy with his picture and a shot of him riding the road racer engraved on it, a really huge trophy. Jim Coughlin of Bell Helmets presented him with a check for $1500. All that and a great dinner made for quite a night for the new Number One for Harley-Davidson. On hand to celebrate was forner No. I, Men Lawwill, who gave him a big push into the pro ranks; mechanic, Jim Belland, and senior member of the Competition Congress and sponsor, Dud Perkins. Combine this with USAC (Former AMA No. I) Joe Leonard; Number One motocrosser, Brad Lackey and the Notes on a Modern Champion More Number Ones than you believed possible in one place. Left to right: Joe Leonard, Mart Lawwill, Mark Brelsford and Dick Mann. Gotcha! Another Number One! Brad Lackey had just cinched the National Number One plate in 500cc motocross. pr~sentation of a very heavy No. I plate from outgoing champ, Dick Mann. [t all helped to make ita very grand affair for Mark and for motorcycling. Of t\Je varied conversations that were in progr-ess from cocktails to dessert,' ."
