i Odo. Storms Marathon N .... '" ai ~ o ~ w Z W ...J U > U by Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., Dec. 3, 1972 - Jim Odom played storm trooper for today's wet wintery marathon. Riding a well set-~p 175 Penton with some fellow members of the Fremont M.C., he took home most of the brass for the day. The 250 affair started out with some 40 entries but within an hour, less than half were 'still left as the rains crept in, making the surface rather slippery. Odom led the en tire tw 0 bours and by the end, bad lapped the field three times except for the second place man, Carl Rodrick. Rodrick made up some great time after starting a lap back. His Schwerma-Honda performed well, and he had little trouble getting by the field. The battle for third didn't develop until the last few minutes when a crowd of riders congregated together in the gooey aftermath of the first shower. KIp Culver and Roger Hall had a seesaw battle for some time although they might not have known how close they were with the Culver/Stokes team on tbe Ossa barely beating out the Baumann/Hall CZ. The opening show for 125's was almost the same type of runaway for Danny Castlebano and Rich Schlein on a DKW after Mike Kalamaras' 125 Bul gave up the cause. Kalamaras had a commanding lead from lap one unlIl he left on the nin th lap. From there it was all the DKW's. Pulling in the second was the Selbv ~Iotors entry of Jim ~Icr.lurray 'and Rich Fuller despite some early problems. Their Rickman performed well with only trafic to contend with. The Open affair started in a light drizzle that finally fizzled but not unt,1 it drove many racers away. Over 40 had signed up but the conditions were bad enough that only 28 made the grid. The interesting part is that while it remained slippery throughout, the traction got better as the race wore on. The bIggest problem seemed to be in the guys trying too hard, crashing and being unable to restart. The BSA of Dennis Tbompson and Glen Oliveria took the early lead but had just such problems, and then most of the rest of the race was between John Frey, and eventual winner Jim Lehman. Frey DNF'ed 11 laps from the end giving Steve Kennedy second and the Thompson Oliveria BSA third m front of Steve Burgess who was supposed to ride with his dad but got the entire race for himself when the old man spent the day at the scoring truck. Black Plates Officially Unofficial by Bill Spencer MODESTO. CAL., Dec. 2, 1972 - The nearly final list of top twenty Experts in District 36 has been released but with a tie for the fmal spot and one race missing, a final revised list will be necessary. Topping the list .for the entire year was Jeff Davidson with 400 points and his win was capped by a fan tastic party this evening honoring those that made the list. Jeff and young brother, Ted, who made No. 8 had cake to cu t and gifts to receive while other district workers got some trophies of their own. Lorretta Davidson received the annual high point Fremont Raceway Trophy girl award for her great work in keeping up with the black plate list and the girls who keep the Oakdale M.C. together were presented with awards. Candidates for Commissioner were introduced. visiting dignitaries uch as competiton committeemen Bill Landsborough, Gerry Carr, and Mike VanLienden were presen t and second place black plate finisher Alex Jorgensen received a standing ovation for his e[forts. The con tinuing parties of the win ter are better attended than the races. This one is to be continued at Donna Hall's annual soiree and will go righ t on through the New Year.
