Eugene MX .. I _ by Keyser Whilley EUGENE, ORE., Nov. 12, 1972 Some 18 Expert riders competed today in the 250cc class for a purse of $250. Dave Leach, recently back from a tour in the Trans-AMA Support class, took three firsts but not without some tough competition from John Heeter and Ch uck Sun. Heeter, affectionately known to locals as "Zuke", led the t11"J't mota by 40 yards until a slip put Leach into the lead. Sun was able to trade leads with Leach, but it was Dave Leach in front when it counted. In the Open Expert class, Leach again took three Hrsts, but this time Billy Oliver, riding a Bultaco, provided the competition. Both Oliver and Leach are going to compete in the tmal three round of the Trans-AMA Support class and both are recdving some faCtory support. Leach is rumored to be preparing a sub-180 pound CZ from American J awa, while Oliver will be Bultaco's Pomeroy in the 250 Support class. Expect to see several local riders in the Puyallup Trans-AMA including Heeter, Leach, Oliver, Esterberg and Owen Belmont. Eugene Motocross ran two Amateur classes for 125cc and 250cc riders and the respo"",, was tremendous with over 20 riders in each Junior and Senior Amateur division. Minis, 100cc and Open Seniors were also run, for a total of over 120 Amateurs. Pioneer Scrambles ... '" N - ~ w Z. The loss to Spe~ce in- the Open Expert run wasn't really a loss as Huff had to come from behind while the new 350 Bultaco had everything pretty 'much its own way. Spence led the early part of the season's black plate race, but love conquers all and he has just recently returned to the racing scene as it closes down its season. Mike Bowling made mincemeat of the 100 Novice Main and heat with his BlendzaH special Hodaka. Ray Hook may well be preparing another young rider for the world as he did with Kenny Roberts some years back. Bowling has all the necessary style and with an instructor and sponsor like Hook, the lessons of racing come easy. • Mark Williams, a more familiar figure on the AMA National circuit, leads Chuck Sun (95l. Wayne Matheny made it look easy in the 125 and 200 Junior Mains with wins that migh t just turn him to the Expert ranks and with that a possibility of a 200 Expert class for next season. There are now some ten 200 Juniors running around and if they would all get together, the Expert class would be revived. .. The minis show their style at Oakdale. o.wt ~ In the Open Expert dass at Eugene.
