Spillway Park MX M by Mike Anderson Photos by SJeve French SANTA MARIA. CAL.. Nov. 5.1972Spillway Park track officials couldn't believe their eyes when they timed Joe Cushaway in the first 250 Expert mota. Joe rode his Boyd and Stelling's CZ to a . 1: 38.5 lap time. a good four seconds under the previous track lap record held by Santa Cruz Pro rider Bob Grossi. Even with this great achievement Joe . couldn't manage a victory in the 250 Expert class. Mark Hovator (Suz) took the Expert gold by virtue of a 2-1-J. score. Joe led the first mota from start to fmish with Mark just getting by Intemlediate rider Brett Yager (Bul) to take second. Mark got a hole shot the next mota and led the whole race despite pressu res from second place Sherman Schneller (CZ). Joe was working up from a bad start un til his engine seized. The third mota found Sherman and Mark trading the lead for the whole race before Mark finally pulled off the win. Joe had mechanical problems again. Sherman ended up second. Poor Brett Yager (Bul) who had taken first in the first two 250 Intermediate matos, reU in the third leaving his win to Mike Martin (Mai). Vince Clark (Suz) was. the only 125 Expert on hand so in order to get a trophy he had to beat all the Intermediates, and he did, by nearly a half a lap. Despite Ray Marshal's (Suz) victories in the first two 125 Intermediate motos he could only manage a second behind Dan Waller (Bul). Wesley Ayres (CZ) and Mike Knofp (Hus) were tied for first going into the last Open Junior mota. Wesley puUed off a win in the last mota to take the overall ahead .of Knopf. This was Wesley's last race in California as he is moving to Missouri in a week. Chuck Czerwinski (Mai) and Bob Rogers (CZ) really went at it in the Open Expert clash. Chuck took the first mota ahead of John Grossini (Mai) and Rogers who had fallen in the start. The next mota Chuck and Bob swapped positions over and over un til Bob ended in the lead ahead of Chuck and John Grossini. Rogers really got together and won the last mota and the overall. A lot of meri t has to go to Tim Marquez (CZ) and Ron Beardsly (Bul). Those two set up a fierce baWe in the 250 Junior class that wowed the spectators. Both Tim and Ron had a first and a second going into the last moto where Ron took the win ahead of Marquez. N :> o Z Vl '!: w z W ...J o >- u MAVRICK $29 .95:~;r P..l'.. L.
