Fremont S c r a m b l e s - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., Nov, 5, 1972 -Jeff Davidson beat Alex Jorgensen for the nQmber one black plate and it was a decisive enough win so that Jorgensen didn't show up to race. Davidson was trying to take advantage of tlris and collect even more points in the 250 class. While leading the main, he seized his Zakarian Bultaco in !.he first comer and wound up wi th only two points for the day, won in !.he 125 Expert class. Early in !.he day knobbies were the hot set up wi!.h a scatterinl!; of rain from !.he previous day making things a little gooey. The heats saw the track start to dry up except for one spot where some of the more obstinate club members decided to' make sure !.hat !.here was some wet and sticky stuff for everybody to run !.hrough. This only seemed to bring consternation to the faces of those who hadn't run sa practice was discontinued. . In the 250 Expert main Davidson took off very fast and was long gone. Following him and doing a good job of leading the pack from second was Mike Kalamaras over this year's Number One, Jim Foley. Jim was on hand to receive an award from Smith's Sportcycle for Amateur achievemen t. He borrowed one of Duane Spence's PurSang's and rode, just for the fun of it. At the end of the second lap when Davidson crashed, Foley held onto second a ways behind Mike and just far enough in fron t of Ted Bailey, to take that trophy home. Dennis Spencer brought his new 350 Bultaco out again and the show was all his. Mike VanLinden kept up the good graces of the big bike class with an exceptional second place [inish on his newly acquired 750 BSA. The minis returned in force and put on a terrific display of riding. Their course was somewhat shorter but the speed was terrific. (415) 369-4112 A new win tertime racing series currently is underway, according to Bill Boyce, manager of professional racing for the American - Motorcycle Association. The 1972-73 American Indoor Short Track Championship Series includes eight events, .each featuring a 56,000 purse. Last year, 12 such events were held and were so well received by the riders, promoters and the public that the introduction of the American Championship Series was formulated. A rider's poin t fund has been established for the first year of the series in which the top ten riders will share--, and an American [ndoor Champion will be declared at the conclusion of the circuil. To rOQl1d out the 1972;73 lndoor Championship eries, a tour of non·poin t-paying, even ts has also been scheduled. Expert, Junior and Novice racers will be pitted against each other in all of the indoor short track races. Each event's program will" consist of four to eight preliminary heats, depending upon the number of riders entered, three semi-finals, a trophy race consisting of the four to six fastest qualifiers, a consolation race made up of those: riders who did not qualify for the semi-finals, and a final race. Following is the schedule of both Championship and non-point paying races. Those marked wi!.h an asterisk denote a Championship Series event.
