...,; o Z ~ w Z W ...J U > U Mini-cyclists romp at Fremont Fremont Scrambles - by Bill Spencer Photos by Jim Hayes FREMONT, CAL., Oct. 29, 1972 Alex Jorgensen won yet another 250 Expert Main event on his Champion Kawasaki and champion was crowned du.ring the annual high point awards. At the halfway point in the day's activities, the high point recipients were called to the middle of the infield and presented with their trophies. The night events of the year saw Jerry Kale go home with the big brass. His 102 points in the 250 Division w~re way out in front of second place finisher, Mike Van Lienden (73 points). He received the four foot high overall trophy and the 250 High Point Blendzall trophy donated by Ray Hook. In the racing part of the day, Jorgensen took a decided win in the 250 Expert run after district pain t leader Jeff Davidson took a hard spill while leading the first heat. His trick ankle _ became sore again, and although he appears to have the number one plate sewed up, the injury may hold him up. Jorgensen closed the gap by six pain ts and brought the gap down to 19 points. With only one month of action left, it will be anotbr tight figbt. ' Finishing second to the flying Jorgy was Fremont ace, Rick Hocking on a rather new Champion Race frame creation. A 250 Honda single was installed in a frame and wi th the addition of a rather unique cam, Hocking had a new toy. John Gennai, aboard a new 350 Bultaco Pursang and with Dennis Spence firmly in tow, left the rest of the 350 Expert field in the dust. Gennai had enough of a lead at the end to demonstrate his famed full·lock slide through the first comer, much to tbe deligh t ,of the assembled. Super cow trailer Rick Hocking and his Honda trailer Del Smith took the win in the 500 Expert run on board a Smith Cycle Haven BSA, his first in some time. Just to keep it all in the family, young brother Mark won the 125 Expert while ,old man J on. the father, surprised all with a third in the 175 ' ovice bash. Keeping it in the family also, was Randy and Jeff Pacheco with wins in the 125 and 250 class. The only trouble was that their father was hobbling It works. Ron Self's trick pit tootsie offers encouragement at the P.A.L. motocross. CMC North MX at Sunnyvale by Steve Castillo Photos by Patrick Neil SUNNYVALE, CAL., Oct. 29, 1972 Ron Self was the big winner in both the 250 and 500 Senior motos. Self, who rides for Trophy Cycles in Moun Lain View, just received a special 250 Maico from the German Factory for racing in the Trans·AMA series. His special Maico combined with his special talent was just too mucb for any Expert. Parry Klassen (CZ) rode well to finish second overall. In the 500 series Henry Halbach (CZ) took the lead and' held it with strong oeposition coming from Ron Bass, the talenteol Maico ride. ¥~1I1t aLb .Luis •• • Ob!lipd. _ Bass put on an unbelievable jumping show for the spectators, but Ron succumbed to a faulty motor and couldn't finish. Halbach won, Self took second. Henry Halbach again found himself leading the last mota with Ron Self in hot pursuit. But fate set in and Henry sUd out in a comer letting Self take his second win of the day. Halbach got going again and was good for second overall. The 250 Junior Division II proved worth watching as two Charley Brown Cycle riClers tangled for first and second. Pat Doran (CZ) rode well all day to take firs with team ma to J erry Castillo taking second. •• - around on crutches, a Vlctlm of other than a motorcycle injury. Ride bikes and stay healthy. An additon of mini·bikers rounded out a full day of racing with nearly 30 entries turning out for the first ever Y·A.I\1A effort for Fremont. The win in these events were taken by the usual en tries of Steve Lucero and Randy Mamola.
