SEXTON RIDES A"'N AT f)J7 SCRAMBLES By Ed Drechsler ADELANTO, CALIF., Aug. 19, 1972Going into the third moto, Doug Nicol and David Edge were tied with iden tical scores. The last 50cc moto was shaping up as a hard fough t. race. Doug has size on his side - in the 50cc class even ounces count at the finish line. David, fighting his size handicap consistantly puts on a good show. There is no doubt that he knows how to ride a motorcycle, as exhibited by the Number ,13 ultralightweight plate he wears (Doug is Number 12), A flash of green and the 50's rip into tum one with David in the lead. Doug fights his way to the front, but a missed shift puts him back in second place. Doug gets it back in the straight-away, but on the next lap the Ugh ts go out causing a restart. The race is f1agge~ off with the riders in the order that they came across the finish line on the prior lap. This time it is pure, testbook as Doug Nicol holds onto the lead and the overall 50cc win. While walking' through the pits I spotted a very familiar 400 radical fmned Maico with a Number one place attached to it. Knowing full well that Jeff Sexton used to own the bike, and still owns the plate I inquired if Jeff was going to ride. Jeff got off bad in a speedway contest and broke his back the first of June (two days before Gail King's birthday), On the ready line I saw him, long, blonde hair and all. It certainly lookec like Jeff before the accident, but I felt that maybe it would be wrong for him to try to early. With his timing .off and all, how could he possibly do any good? Jeff was hot on Kirk Redding's fender in Moto 1 when Kirk fired a plug and had to drop out. Moto 2 saw Redding get a fair start in row two and push to the number three position, Sexton won it decisivly with Bob Sanders on a super-trick 350 Kawasaki taking second, Moto 3 saw Redding get a super good start. Sexton worked his way up to second at the jump of the first lap, and thats the way they finished. Bob Sanders broke, but his two seconds were enough for a third overall. Jeff won it, with Kirk second. What a race! c. "
