Petaluma Scrambles - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ... By James Brammer PETALUMA, CAL., Aug. 12, 1972 As partisan Petaluma fans would want, Larry Drew won both the 250 and the Open Expert class in the Saturday night scrambles at the Sonoma·Marin Fairgrounds. Not an easy win in either class, Drew riding a Cycle West Ossa was under constant threat in the comers from Jim Coats riding from a competitor shop, Yamaha of Petaluma, in the 250 final. Drew held an advantage in the high speed sections of the track but Coats made up the difference each time in the comers. Meanwhile, an exciting race for third spot ran between Dave Dotson and Russell Powell. Powell led Dotson most of the race with the young upstart overtaking Powell for third. The first three place fmishers in the Open Expert class had matched horsepower with BSA 500's while Jim Saitone ran fourth on his 360 Motocross M"aico. In the early laps of the even t, Allen Yarrow on a 500 Maico racing Drew for first was passed by Bill Calicura and then Yarrow pulled out of the race as, his engine started seizing. Calicura stayed with Drew even pulling ahead but on the outside in the comers. Drew holding closely to the inside white line marking the course held the advan tage to the finish.
