r----------~i Class A stvle and a auick check af traffic. AM E Motocross By Tom Corley IRVINE, CAL., Aug. 13, 1972 - With an unpredictable thundering rain Saturday, it· looked like all of the local motocross races would have been held with very wet track conditions. As it turned out, the only thing that poured on Saddleback Park was a swarm full of sporty racers, hangin' it out for the American Motocross Enterprises J awafCZ Ser,ies. The small bore 100 class was larger than usual ,vith all of the regular AME racers striking out and the newcomers picking up the lucky wins. At the very start of the first mota, three of the very fastest Hodaka-racers, Bob Stem, Ric Roberts, and Bill Glore rallied ahead with their B & V Hodaka high-performance engines pulling the competition by a longshot. Soon this mighty trio ran into disaster and lost positions. After three ever-changing matos, the winners were Brad Lynch (Kaw), John Salinsky (Hod), Ray Strunk (Har), and Ric Roberts followed by Scott Hanssler and Bill Glore all on winning Hodaka racing bikes. The AME CZ Series drew in a barrel of rapid action in the 500 Senior class where the thumping sounds of four-strokers were heard as often as the screamin' two-strokes. Ron DeSoto collected the money on a Mid-Valley winning CZ that just seemed to humm around fast enough to keep on top of the troopers. While Ron had a very convincing win, the best racing action was between LeBard & Underwood racer Terry Powers who was seated on a jet of a BSA aod Mid-Valley racer Bob Hershey. This class seemed so crowded with the best competition that even the guys that usually chew-up this race were falling down in positions. DeSoto placed first with Hershey sneaking by Powers for overall with Hoyt Statham (Hus) and Gary Cochell (Bul) in fourth and fifth. Chuck Minert (BSA) and Jim West (Hus) were two of the biggest names out for the AME race today but proved that even the super biggie MX racers can have fouled luck now and then. Both had to sacrifice the money aod ended up empty handed. Carlsbad Raceway will hold the next AME organized race this coming weekend so be there and stay tuned to Cycle News for complete coverage of the AME CZ Series. Escape Country MX by Mike Capalite SANTA ANA,CAL., Aug. 6, 197-2 Despite an hour-and-one-haiI wait on the ambulance crew to show up in the morning, the motos were run off in jig time so everyone was loaded to go home by four o'clock. With haiI of the riders being new to the course, it made for some exciting tangles in the first corner, but luckily it was only the equipment that suffered. Wi th the Open class being the low entry class of the ay, the wins went to Chris Manning in the first day category and to Carrol Mcintosh in the Beginners, and Robert Crecelius was the' quickest Novice_ The 250cc first day class loomed up as the big entry class as Ken Taylor grabbedthe first place gold with a fourteen point total. The 250cc Beginners was a trophy getter for Charles Beck followed by Jerry Hollister and Skip Taylor. Mike Causey, the rider who failed to win the Beginner.class two weeks ago came back this week for a win in the 250 Novice division wi th Ted Tennitkeit and Dennis Causey next in line. Mike Sixberry was top 250 Amateure and Ty Scott was the first Expert in. Still a little down on entries, the 185 class is showing a little improvement with James Alfonso taking home the gold for the 1st day riders and Mark Springer doing the same in the Beginner Class. This class was set up so the 175 and 185 machines wouldn't have to run against the 250cc bikes, bu t if the riders don't start supporting it, it will be dropped from the program. While it was a little crowded in the 125 1st day class, Garth Bennett was able to bring home the bacon with one third and two first for the overall win over Mark Mueller and Jeffrey Vilker. In the 125 Beginners it was Chris Bartlett with a like score to top Drue Hasse and Joe Smith. Greg Bartoch had to come back from a first moto position of fifth to take two wins in the 125 Novice for an over 'all win ahead of Jeff Crowell and Kirk Atteberry. If not the fastest, the 100cc first Day class has got to have the' most en thusiasim as Steve Gavin was able to couple three straight wins together for a first place. Raymond Williams who moved up ou t of the beginners class from two weeks ago showed the Novices how to do it as he zapped them in all three motos for the win. It was Jim Curland topping the 100cc Beginners and Kevin Crawford in the Expert class rounding off the wins in the 100cc class. Undoubtedly the fastest growing and the most enthusiastic class of the whole day is the Mini-Enduro class. In the first day mini division it was Geoff Singer doing it to the troops in all three motos for a clean sweep over second place Eric Moll. Mike Dannelley was a clean sweep in the Beginner class as was Bobby Tocco in the Novice Division. To round it out, Brad Dutoit followed suit in the Amateur divisiori to take home the gold. With Excape country's $4,000.00 pro motocross coming up on September lOth, the next race on August lOth will probably see many of the big guns in the Expert class out getting the feel of the track. Arroyo turned some great Experts loose in a chase for the long green ones which were paid to Jim Fishback (CZ) for the 250 aod Troy Hollis in the open. Top 125 Expert was Bob McLaughlin (PKW).
