~ GIRLS & :. ... N FJ Cll e;;, " « ~ w Z w oJ U >U Now, ·for the first time ever, Cycle News can offer you a way to become more popular. The far-out looking guy on the track is more than a number. - . , CMC A s c o t - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - You could boogie on down and rap with him like you knew him from before, if you only knew his name. HALLELUJAH . Bruce Baron rode the American Honda 125 motocrosser to a first overall at outing and his first go on the machine. -- Cycle News will send you his name and 9,999 more for a dollar bill. By Buzz Baty GARDENA, CAL., Aug. 16,1972 - Oh joy, four stroke fans, OUf time is here! All true four-stroke fans may now observe one minute of silence, and give, each in your own way a silent thank you to American Honda and Long Beach Honda. Not only did a four-stroke thump out a victory over the ring-dings, they gave it to 'em in a double dose . . Bob Hosford took the Long Beach Honda, Bill Bell-constructed, XL 250 to victory in the Expert class over A sco t stalwarts like Danny Hockie- (Oss) who had to settle for second, and Bultaco-mounted Bob Messer, getting in for third, while perennial winner, Tim Hart, didn't even get a sniff of the first three places in any of the motos. I don't know how many hours Chris Agajanian is putting into course construction and changes each week, but its got to be a ton. Naturally, you can't please everybody and there were those who hated tonigh t's layout, and those who loved itPersonally, I though t that it was a well laid ou t course that was a challenge to all, even to those hotshoes who in the past had Ascot pretty well wired. As last week, the general conditions of the track as A-I, except (or a couple of spots that got a little dusty. I really hope that Chris keeps this course configuration for a while, so that some of the riders who were not here tonight can have a shot at it. N ow for the icing on that four-stroke cake: On aboard the second time out at· Ascot the oew and nifty little 125 Honda with Bruce Baroo aboard, in three really head-to-head duels with Charlie Bower's Penton and Danny Hockie on a Hodaka, nosed out Bower and Hockie for first overall. Baron indicated that he's really high on this little Honda. His liking of the machine, plus his aggressive riding sty Ie, is what did th e trick for the Westiminster hotshore and the American Honda-prepared scooter. ----------------------------------This handy pocket size book lists the names and' numbers of over 10,000 competition riders in California, covering AMA, CMC, ACA, AFM, CERA, HflA, USMRC, Trials, Speedway & Sidehacks competition organizations. DEALER INQUIRIES INVITED by Marilyn Hart CORONA, CAL., Aug. 10, 1972 - One of the largest crowds to date at COTona witnessed a superb night of motocross under excellent conditions. The 100 Juniors started the program with David Rawley on his Bul taking first overall. Drew Nelson (Yam) and Jerry McCarty (Hod) were in for second and third. Next, the 125 Senior & Intermediate combined saw Dave Rogers (BuI), Dave Carlson (BuI) and Mike Paulsell (Pen) respectively for the 125 Senior money. Bob Maxwell (Bul) was first 125 Intermediate with Gre~ Gibbonet (Pen) and Bryan Justice (Bul) wi th the second and third wins. The 125 and 250 Juniors had three classes each and, as usual, the third mo to was the main even t following qualification. In the 125 Junior class, Ron Rieke (Puc) was first overall followed by Jedd Strange and Jon Miller (both on Yamahas). CZ's swept the 250 Junior Main with Jim Latendresse, Robert Pulf, and Steve Diehr in that order. Terry Trachy (CZ) did it again in the 500 Intermediate class,. but that unbelievable Res Staten dominated the track in both the 250 and 500 Expert classes for the take-home pay. The 250 Expert was a great race with some familiar names - Staten (CZ) first; Doug Sherman (CZ), second; and Rich Eierstedt (Mai), third. However, the 500 Expert race was something else! Head'ing into the second moto of the 500 Experts, Staten was on a winning streak of 15 for 15. But - there just happened to be' a racer on a Bul named Ken Zahrt who took care of that, thus putting the fioal moto up-for-grabs. Zahrt had a comfortable lead with a great start, only to find that Rex had put on his wings again and literally flew by on that rough dowhnill! As Dale Teubner put it, "That's just gotta psych .."'""''fI~~~~~~~~~~~~~===I!III1~!JJ!r.!7l~,,.~rIJ ...~a8:~o~u~t~-s;w~~'d. ~li c 'l!-eye to pass that fast there? It was still one special kind of race with Zahrt righ t behind Staten at the finish and Eierstedt in for the third. The last moto of the nigh (the 3rd for the 500 Juniors) was perhaps one of the be tter ones, had it not just followed the Experts. It was tight all the way and, at the fmish line, a huge pile up. Wheo the dust cleared, it showed Dave Hernandez (Yam) in first, Doug Stagg (Hus) second, and Leon Baird (Hus) for the overall positions. Problems plagued several of the riders, including Tom Rapp, DeWayne Jones, etc., but Gaylond Mosier had more than bis share. He lost his chain in the fiTst moto, and second moto caugh t him literally dragging his tail (pipe) behind him over the finish line, and in moto 3, his gas tank poped up to greet him on his entry to the infield on the 2nd lap. Bets are they'll all be back to a great track! EI Taro MX - - - - - - - By Kent Nicholls Photos by Bob Thompson EL TORO, CAL., Aug. 11, 1972 There was a Ii ttle kid at El Toro tonigh t who won five out of the six motos that he rode. Eleven year-old Mike Brown (Ind) got beaten in the fiTst moto of the Schoolboy class, then went 00 to ,vin the next two motos. He then climhed on a Monark and won all three motos of the 100 Juniors. Joe Flores (Hod) and Davy Carlson duel for three motos in the 100 Expert class with Carlson winning and Joe getting a close second. J De had the 125 Expert class sewed up until he fell in the third moto. He went from last to third in five laps. Bruce Baron won. Baron also took first spot in the 250 Expert class. I. Borjdstein (Mai) took Open Expert honors. Jack Wright (B5A) commanded all I three frist division Open Junior mo~os,' • .. ) .
