M HODGES HUSTLES SAN JOSE OPEftER By Bill Spencer SAN JOSE, CAL., Nov. 6, 1971- Greg Hodges opened up tbe San Jose Indoor season witb a thriller that brougbt his Gene Lankins' Suzuki in for the first kill in front of 127 of the finest indoor pilots in the world. Hodges, a three-year veteran of the indoor sce.ne, had li ttle difficulty winning the I5-lap Main after a first tum start that saw Steve Foster get completely sidewise to the track and still manage to stay uprigb t. Despite this, he restarted and was firmly in control of second behind Joe Allen when along came Scally and drove under and around the King of the Madison Square Garden. In the battle for that spot, Dave Hansen and his Cycle Imports Triumph Cub made the scene and the spot leaving ScaI1y third and AI fourth and spots in the semi. Scalley and Kenyon did their thing once again in the first semi with J err Hammond doing the leading and the winning and AI getting off once again. His comment later was something like Uget it ou t of my system." He was obviously unhappy but knew that is the way Ihings happen indoors. Scally hung on for the second again, containing Allen who has spent much of his short racing career chasing Joe Heruy at CycleIand's short track in Chico. For the Main Scally was content with second as Hodges developed a two second lead at the end and despite bis yell of "kill" when he made the MAIL0RDER SPECIALIST ~roduct5 PUCH Mnlimited 34S-~7300 (213) I knmediate Shipment on all Parts and Accessories NORTHWEST LARGEST STOCK OF ACCESSORIES & CLOTHING FOR STREET OR TRAIL t : Yamaha & • : Triumph : of Fontana DISPLA Y ADVERTISING DEADLINE t (213) 887·7696 instant horsepower • • Maico, DKW, CZ, Hodaka, BMW· • • 9008 Sierra Ave. A~t/). • • WITH A Y-q DYKES RING PISTON ilvailable in 6 oversizes Irom 1" thru 6'" over lor OTl. Terry Graham rode his way to a seventh, which is notable when you consider that his machine was a C-Z. Russ Powell, who was going so fast at the fust, didn't make the last as in the semi he had a slight altercation with Pat McCaul. It has happened in the past and he displayed some uncalled [or emotion that cost him his winnings for the night program, his style and form is tbe greatest and he will be a tough man to beat for the high point series. Steve Foster rode his Sonny Kenyon Bultaco to the third spot with Hansen hot on his heels. Finishing fifth and returning to his old style was Mike Yarn, the '68!69 champ on Joe Simas' Bultaco.
