Add to this the presence of Ake Jonsson's little brother, Tore, on a works 400 Maico, and a really super night of moto·xing was on hand. The first lnt/Exp. 500 moto was a real gas as Morris Malone came off the line like a rocket on his 250 AJS, and try as hard as he could, Dave Smith couldn't get by Malone who rode a great rac.e. With Smith running second, Jonsson, not knowing the course, followed Dave in for third. The second moto saw Smith on his 400 Maico get by Malone with Jonsson third, But on the second lap, both Malone and Jonsson got off down in the gul.ly letting Martin Richmond (CZ) and Eric Olsen (Hus) in for second and third. Calif. 125 JR. DIV. 1 SENIORS all together, but so was Dave Smith and the third moto saw Jonsson push Smith every inch of the way. Dave was equal to the job and Jonsson had to settle for second. Smith got the overall win with JonssoJ] second and Malone third. Morris took his Ajay to the number one spot twice, and second once, in the 250 Int/Exp. for the overall 250 win, with Bruce McDougal (Yam) second and Chuck Bower (Mai) third. Chuck Bower had a good night, and will pick up some of that USRC gold next Friday night, when Bob Maynard and Lew Sto! tz pass ou t th e trophies and checks. Bower and his Penton have been real hard to beat of late in the 125 class.' The track was hard and fast, a few riders were riding over their heads, and a couple managed to land on them, here and there, this required the use of the ambulance, which delayed the program a bit, so next Friday night will see to ambulances on hand. Arnold WILMINGTON, CAL., Nov. 13, 1971 The action was unreal to nigh t as Boris Murray, Sonny Raslowki, Bill Chambers and many others showed for some super fast dragbike racing. Murray, owner and pilot of the world's fastest and now unofficially quickest fuel dragbike, just finished rebuilding the twin Triumph engines and was out to "check it out a little". Ch.eck it out he did with a first run of 164+ at 9+ seconds. Sounds fantastic for a quarter mile run doesn't it? Just tnink what would nave happened if both engines Itad run! The front engine had breaking in problems, the rings wouldn't set allowing oil to get into the nead. Oil and nitro-methene don't burn fast enough for the engine to do more than jus turn over. The second run was in Murray's own words H very embarrassing". A quick check of the track provided the answer. A think line of oil left by a dragster was the cu(prit. The look on the' face of the La Verne, Calif., champion as he turned around to see what the problem was, was just pure disgust. This man has some kind of hair. Would y.ou look behind you with 250 np shredding and smoking the tire without letting off the throttle and shake your head in disbelief? All the dragbike class cycles had their problems. Raslowski had built a new 96-inch sportster engine only to have it blow on his first run. As Sonny passed through the lights at 154 mph, the front half of the ngine flew 20 feet in the air. The reason the head and barrel didn't go higher was that Raslowski's knee was in the way. Score to date: Sonny Raslowski - 1 head, 1 barrel, 1 piston, 1 case, numerous rods and nuts and bolts. Sportster - 13 ~titches in knee, I pair leathers, some skin, much money. Referee calls it a draw! In the money bike brackets, Lions regular Terry Vance (Honda 4) defeated Jack Larragoitiy (Honda) to take home $30 .• 'A final note, Murray was asked how he will know when ne is really going fast. His reply came back, "I want the bike to scare the hell out of me. Then I'll know that I am going fast!" McManus Wins 250; Only Second in Open INDIO, CAL., Nov. 7, 1971 - John McManus of Indio, Calif., riding the Bill Lowell Engineering Kawasaki 250 prepared by Desert Kawasaki, jumped into the lead at the start of the Highsiders' Scrambles and held a commanding lead the entire 45-minute race to win the 250 class here today. On the same machine, McManus dueled with Ron Duggan (Hus) to take' second in the Open class.
