GROSSI'AND-,COMPANY SMOKE 'EM /' By Sam Mangalin MONTEREY, CAL., Oct. 24, 1971 The MRA held their second motocross of the season on the new track located amidst the Laguna Seca Golf Ranch in the hills just ahove Monterey. The sandy one-mile circuit must be one of the best tracks in all of California, as it offers, in addition to a beautiful view overlooking the Monterey Bay, a wide variety of jumps, drop-offs and turns, all of which can be easily viewed by the spectators. This is the kind of track the EuropeanS would love to ride, for it is rough, loose and fast, yet horsepower alone will not do it for you. Rumor has it that just such an event might be in the making. Let's hope for it! . It doesn't' take long for the word to get around when there is a true rider's track in the area, and this day was no exception as a fme group of NorCal's more daring young men of the dirt made the line-up. Carl Cranke and friends came down from Sacramento; among them was Ron Stockman and, from the Bay Area, Russ Powell and the Grossi brothers. Of .all, one man stood out among the troops. That man was Bob Grossi, and he wasted little time in showing the crowd what motocross is all about. Bob is determined to re-establish himself as America's premier hopeful on the rugged Trans-AMA circuit where up until now few have been able to crack the European domination. Riding with his arm still wrapped in bandages, recovering from a severe break on the eve of his European departure this past summer, Bob looked close to form as he easily won both 30-minute motos in the Open Senior race. Cranke had a shot at him for the fifst two laps in each moto, but it soon became apparent who was master of the rough. This was only Bob's third time out since getting the cast removed and his only comment was something about getting a sore arm the last two laps of the race. He will be back for the nex t MRA moto on November 7 and then if all goes to plan he will be off to join the Trans-AMA in Oklahoma. The race of the day was in the second moto of the 250 Senior Division. Ron Stockman took an early lead and seemed determined to repeat his walkaway win of the first moto when he suddenly found himself involved in a fierce threesome figh ting for the lead. Bill Grossi, younger member of the clan, had gotten away clean from the start and quickly put himself in contention by taking over second place on lap two, then just as quickly set upon Stockman_ So they went, wheel to wheel, in spectacular fashion. Meanwhile, Russ Powell, running a distant fifth, decided he had had enough sand kicked in his face. With that, he put himself in third and righ t on the heels of the front runners. While Powell was going unnoticed in his bid for third, Grossi was letting loose every thing he had and passed Stockman with a roar of approval from the spectators, none more enthusiastic than brother Bob coaching from the sidelines. But alas, success is but short lived and Grossi's style got the better of him and a few costly mistakes let Stockman put himself back into the lead. However, it was not to be Stockman's cake either, as Powell has also gotten by the high-flying Grossi and was putting the wheel under Stockman. A few tough laps was all Stockman could take and Powell took command of the lead, stretching it out for a very convincing win. Stockman got a little exuberant exiting onto the straigh t and fell shortly thereafter, leaving Grossi in full command of second. Powell is better know for shorttrack arid halfmile performance, but he set the record straigh t this day and established himself among the front runners as a definite threat in rough. He is big, strong and always a determined competitor, just what it takes to be successful in motocross and his recent switch to Husqvarna seems to have iced that cake for him. John Gennai and Jim Foley are still doing their thing in the quest for the high spot and while no one else is close enough to overtake either one, the other spots are still pretty much up for grabs. The three heat races produced wins for Mike RensIow, Ray Huff and John Gennai. Gennai capitalized on his win and went to take the Main with Foley stuck in third behind Steve Fredrickson. While there was no racing Friday night, Saturday's Fremont affair put Foley two more points up over Gennai and although Genttai---reg3.ined -tw011'0intS-in today's action, he lost a point on the weekend as the trophy count was only sIX today while last night it was seven. Lining up for the 650 Expert Main found Gennai missing. With no apparent reason other than he had won the 250 race and garnered six points, Bill Budde had little difficulty beating' out Dennis Spence and Jimmie Brooks. While this expla~ation of no Gennai is plasuible, it doesn t make much sense, as he needs points for lb.e Na.tional count. The number one is nice in District 36 but the National Scrambles Championship is much better. The combined 500-650 Junior Main went easily to Thorton Smith and Tony Gonzales after 500 BSA MXer, Gary Trammell took to the outside looking for more room and got stuck on the outside of the first tum:" ~_.
