This is a large class and five bikes decided they wanted the same groove at the comer at the same time and instant smash·up! Nothing too spectacular about a crash like this but the gas tank on one machine ruptured and ignited. All this happening while bikes are still trying to come around the comer. Flagmen had their work cut out for them. Fortunately there was no panic and even better no injuries unless on char broiled motorcycle can be called an injury. The re-start and AJS pilot Richard Tingstrom repeated Illmself from two weeks before and took the overall win. A friendly grudge race had been promised in the Open Junior class among four riders, the brothers Czerwinski: Maico and Suzuki pilots, Scott Frisby (Hus) and John Caldwell (CZ). This contest was anxiously anticipated by all who knew these friendly competitors. Caldwell, David Czerwinski and Frisby started in that order at the start with David narrowing John's lead until a tangle with brother Chuck sent David into an endo and gave Caldwell the first. Second time out Frisby took the- lead and hdd off the rest of the pack so third time out it was Dave's tum! By far, one of the most exciting races of the day. Caldwell took the overall win with Frisby and Dave Czerwinski second and third. And then the rains came. Spillway Park just happens to be laid out in the Santa Maria riverbed and everyone mew it today. The third moto was run in the rain, with thunder and ligh tning for special effects. Some guys thought it was the RJ"eatest, others didn't think it was so neat but no one wanted to call it off. Lap checkers scattered for the shdter of a van with windshield wipers working furiously in order to score riders. Rain gear appeared from out of nowhere and everyone had a ball! In spite of all that nature had to offer the Starters did a fme job and trophies were awarded to all the soggy but happy winners. This was his second official ride after this incident and it really seems that he did not lose any of his great talent, 'because today he showed everyone that he is still in command on a motocross track. He won the first moto of 25 minutes by just out riding all other competition. The only rider that gave him any hassle was Carl Cranke of Gene's Automotive of Loomis, Calif., until his transmission failed about halfway through the race. From then on Bob ran away from all. In the second moto Bob turned it on again and lapped all riders excep.t three at the end of the moto, to take the . overall win in the Open Expert class. . The track was in perfect condition and the riders rode it backwards which was rather novel. There were a few riders that were turned away at the gate due to the 300 limited entry but with fewer riders the day went off without any delays with the motos scored within the half hour after the last race and trophies given out with no problems. There were no major injuries due to the condition of the track thanks to track preparer 'Tinker' McGill and his trusty bulldozer. The first race of the day was the l00cc Novice riders with Jeff Sutton winning both motos on his little Honda. Right behind his on each moto was a new rider in the motocross game, Jeff Dumm of RosviIle, CaJjf., whom finished second overall. The 125 Novice Div. 1 winner was a Penton rider that also won each moto to take the win. Steve Ramono of Watsonville rode like the devil was after Illm. The Novice 125 Div. U winner was Brian Jordy of Rancho Cordova on his Yamaha, from Levitt power tool company. Jim Boyette rode his Suzuki to the win in the 125 Novice Div. Il race to take the win. One of the best races of the day was the 125 Am/Ex. race with Ken Garard MUNTZ MOTORCYCLE PAR.
