While the question was settled amongst the riders, some of Williams' friends became quite snotty about the idea that he was illegal and why anyone would question him. In the 10-lap consolation Neal McGregor rode around Bill Morgan for the win on his E.T. Cycle Ossa to make his short record impressive by posting his second consolation win in only three races. He won the consolation at Fremont Raceways' first event. The Main closer resembled a Chinese fire drill than a race as going into the first tum, Kenyon was pushed off when Steve Foster got pushed into him. Kenyon took out Crenshaw and the immediate thinking by all was a restart, but it never came and when Kenyon saw that it wasn't going to come, remounted and took off like a man possessed. In a short time he had unlapped himself but was unable to get back through the pack and had to settle for sixth behind Russ Powell, a veteran of the San Francisco Cow Palace. Williams took the lead coming off t)1e mayhem first tum and appeared to have cyerything under control with Hocking and F oster behind. F oster took the ~econd spot in the next turn but on the next lap, he got black flagged for knocking off Kenyon. As ridiculous as it . may be, that's what happened and Foster got last for his efforts. Hocking settled in for second spot while more and more get-offs were happening. Towards the middle of the race, as Williams was lapping through the pack, he got stuck behind Bob Goodman and when he thought he had a way around, he slid wide and Hocking went underneath. It wasn't as· if Goodman was going slow, but the time it took for Williams to find a way around the A & A Bultaco was enough for Hocking to make up the shott distance and when Williams went wide, the Murrell Sportcycle Bultaco was firmly in control. The starter lost the first place count for a lap or two but was aided by flagmen and when the white went out, it was for Hocking. As the 18-year-old Fremont rider took the checkered the stands went into a Iuror reminiscent of Madison Square Garden when Kenyon won. The fans really loved it. Hocking loved the $1000 fust prize, too_ Despite the trouble and problems, it was a night to remember and the promoters are thinking about more. This club wanted to get their feet wet beIore they officially sponsored races and the Lompoc Slo·Pokes must have an in with someone upstairs cause these poor fellas were faced with every calamity imaginable.. The morning started with very low temperatures and racers were anxious to get oIf the line to keep warm and the Powder Puffs got off right on time with Cherry Stockton (Bul) taking the lead each moto and holding off the rest of the gals. This female also rode with the 125 jrs.. and didn't do too badly. A couple of four strokes battled it out in the 100 jrs. with David Gomez on a Baja and Randy Schwalenberg Honda mounted. Scott. Victor riding a Suzuki had had a third and got the lead the second time out and held off the two four strokes when he holed a piston and retired for the day! The competition between Suzuki riden Mike David, Vince Clark, john Grossini and some Yamaha riders had the 12.5 Sn_ on their toes. These guys are experienced and aggressive and know their machines and best of all they are all friends until they get on the track. Today's go-round found the·-lead changing many times. The fiercest battle seemed to be between David and Larry Greer for the lead. Mike had' it on the last lap with Larry trying for that last bit of power at the checkered and (Pil'as<' tUTIl to /Jag,. 16) HY-VO FOR MOTORCYCLES Available for Triumph and BSA Twins.
