AFTER HEADER, PFU By Alice Rhea PARKER, ARIZ., Oct. 23, 1971 Larry Pfutzenreuter, riding a 250 Mitco Bultaco PurSang, got a big hand from the spectators as he crossed the finish line flrst overall in the 21st Annual Cbeck Chase today. Larry finished the 145 mjle cross-country Hare and Hound in three hourse, 20 mjnutes, comjng across the line at 12 :20 p.m. "It was a real rider's course," Fitz commented, "I didn't get tired except one wrist...I got on my head before the fust check" he explained, "and I bent the handlebars and was riding a little funny to compensate." "The Checkers ran us through some of the worst country the desert has to offer, but then you would come out of it and there would be some open desert or a fire road where you could rest." Following close on Pfutzenreut~r's heels was Desert Fox, Mike Patrick, riding a 360 Yam. First Trail Expert was Wayne Cook who finished eighth overall on a H-D. and hot on his heels was Trail Expert Dick Mark (Hod). First 250 Amateur was T. Dillon, on his Husky. A word is due here for Bob Gilbert, who recently received his 250 Amateur plate. Bob was first Amateur through first, second and third gas pits but dropped his 250 Bultaco about five mHes from the finish and stuck the handlebar halfway through his bod. He managed to finish 82 overall at that and Checkers gave him a trophy f<.>r being 15th 250 Amateur. "Boy," Bob moaned, holding his ribs, "if there had been just one less rock...... First Novice to finish was No. 220x, M. Hauss and first 500 Novice was E. Sanches. First TraH Amateur, W. Bache, fmished 49th overall. Comjng down the gravel wash in I68th place was the first Trail Novice, No. 258 Larry Morgan (Hon). Dale "Holmes, Superintendent of Instruction for the Riverside School District, rode his 100 Honda to fourth place in the Trail Novice class. I didn't think an educated man could get crazy enough to go that fast! I didn't see J.N. Roberts all weekend, but heard his fuel tank split before the first check and put him out of the race. That and worse happened to a lot of men today. Of the 250 racers that lined up at Cbiiaco Summit only 396 came across the finish line. Included in the number of finishers is Kookie, the motorcycle-riding dog belonging to John Cowan, a Novice 400 Husky rider. Kookie received a trophy for being flrst dog. Also included in the total flnishers in Tom Darby, who rode passenger in the Triumph 650 sideback ridden by Karl Krobnpilot. Karl and Tom finished with a flat tire on the hack and a flat on the back of the Triumph. The pair received aCbeckers' trophy for first sidehack. Members of the Checkers were stationed along the no-no road leading to the bomb and they flagged down riders who were using it. 1£ the rider stopped, they had him wait one minute then sen t him across the desert to the Tom Muto, third expert.
