EBBS -IN POINT RUN .... '" "j ~ fans, this win must not go unnoticed. Jim Connolly won the Open Expert class in a driving downpour. He beat out such notables as Jeff Sexton, Chuck Wheat and Rick Marquis. The conditions were too bad to allow accurate reporting, let along photography, but it appears that Jeff Sexton was going like he really wanted this one but he laid it down. Jim, following the tracks of Jeff, got all the drive he needed by riding off the slick z ~ w Z W ..J U >- U clay surface and onto the sand shoulder. How he could see where he was going is beyond me. Jim came prepared to zapp Jeff by bringing a 400 Suzuki mounted in to a specially adjustahle frame manufactured by Hinde!. He would ha"e rode it, but couldn't get it started. Seems that it is a test bike for a magazine that everyone has heen abusing. Jim did win on his un-retired Greeves with a sick bottom end. The T.T.M.C. wishes to thank all 175 riders for their cooperation - especially the heavyweigh ts. Because they were only allowed one moto, the club gave out extra trophies. INTERNATIONAL EUROPEAN Slip & Slide? SPEEDWAY Headed by World 1000 meter Long Track Champion Ivan Mauger of New Zealand, and Antonin Svab of Czechoslovakia (World Ice Racing Champ), seven of Europe's best speedway racers will take on Ascot's notorious halfmile dirt oval matched with America's best riders. The big question is, can these fuel-burning SOOcc bikes with their spiQdly frames, lap faster than Class A riders such as Romero and Lawwill. The record stands at 22.32 seconds. Will Mauger beat it? Added to the international flavor will be an appearance by Antonin Svab of Czechoslovakia, a World Champion ice racer, who won the title in the sub-zero temperatures'of Russia. The rugged Czech knows no fear. This is the spectacle not to be missed. The international' broad-sliders and their fuellers!! By Elaine Jones PERRIS, CAL., Oct. 16, 1971 - If anyone needed convincing that motorcycle riders were a bit touched all they had to do is come to Perris Saturday night. A good crowd showed up despite overcast skies and intermittent rain. The weather cleared long enough for the mini-bikes to do their thing but, as if on cue, as soon as the big bikes lined up to start practice the skies opened up and the rains came down. Not only rain but with it hail. The course had already been re-routed from previous rains and the Rogue River was running under my pick-up in a matter of minutes. Eighty some odd riders did the motocross bit using one hand as a windshield wiper as they went around. To say the track was more like a swamp is putting it mildly and to say how cold it was would be absolutely impossible. As I sat in my pick-up with the heater going it was difficult to figure out what would make someone try to ride in weather like that unless they had some loose screws in the area between the ears. Finally a bunch of very wet people decided to hang it up and adjourn to the local pizza place to give Heavyweigh t rider, Vince Graves, a surprise 22nd birthday party and present the Burtons with a trophy for being the best race track owners around. It was the smartest move of the evening. ANTONIN SVAB (Czechoslovakia) World Ice-Racing Champion.
