01 ~ " .. NRUETER REGAINS LEAD-- WINS CHECK CHASE co Q. trail. Those who wouldn't stop when flagged had their numbers taken and were disqualified. Mickey Mouse, No.1 (this week) Ron "the Burp" Burpo, riding a Honda SoL 70 out of Oassis Honda of Palm Springs did rather well today_He was first mouse, about 150 overall, to within 10 miles of the fiIUslt, when his little yellow scooter gave up_ Ron, a clever mouse, loaded his bike in the trunk of the car, drove to the finish line got out and walked down the hill to receive his finisher's pin. Those MMMC'ers just don't give up! A few miscellaneous commen ts heard during the day follow: "Whoever laid out that run to the bomb knew he warn't going to have to n'de it. ~ w Z W ..J c.> >c.; U HThat race was TUFf" "Well, I guess the Desert Turtles told the Checkers where to find some rocks... man it must have taken a month to truck them all in." !f+I%/&*@ . Checkers". Rescue 3 is said to have had a very busy day, including a rough estimate of 33 broken bones. Seems like everybody got off at least once. A California Highway Patrolman showed up at the first gas pit, check 2, and stopped traffic for our racers and pit crews so the guys could ride their bikes across the highway and pit crews could rna ke a dash for the nex t pit area. Now, they aren't all such bad guys, are they? It was a fun race for everybody who finished. It was a rough one, going through a sand wash that must have been 20 miles long, across more rocks than most people see in a lifetime, and even through a water hazard (mud hazard?) but nobody said it wasn't fun. Results were computed Saturday night and trophies presented Sunday afternoon. Ron Sloan and George Walker, thanks for helping me put it together. It was a real fun race, Checkers. It really takes a lot of work to locate that much terrible country and lime and ribbon it. REsULTS 1. L. Pfutzenreuter 2. 3. 4. 5. M. Patrick T. Muto R. Alexander W.
