Morrison Swift at Trojan Meet ti By Art Loya SOUTH GATE, CAL., Oct. 14,1971 There doesn't seem to be much doubt that Trojan Speedway's finest TT and nat track performers put on a fantastic show Thursday night. With the championship point season drawing to a close next month, and star riders beginning to make the move to Trojan as the season brings the curtain down in nearby surrounding area tracks, the speed session on the fifth-mile oval was easily one of the fastest ever. The swiftest of these was 19-year.old Rob Morrison of Rowland Heights. In one of the greatest displays of short·track racing, Morrison and his Kawasaki, made it plain that he can deliver under pressure. And how right he was. His tirst of three Main Event victories came in the 100 TT, a 12-1apper and a field of 14, that saw the top three finishers hold the lead at one time or another. Trailing Tom Doty (Hon), and Sanders (Kaw) on the first lap, Morrison pressured both leaders as Sanders took the lead on the second lap. In the next two laps, Morrison moved to second on the third time around, and then moved in to challenge Sanders in a brief duel taking the lead on the fourth lap. Once out in front, Morrison just made himself at home right down to the checkered followed by Sanders, Doty, Dean Meyers (Hon), and Walley Jon (Suz). Morrison continued his victory streak with a blistering see·saw exchange of the lead with Sanders in the 125 TT Main. This event was easily the price of admission as Sanders jumped into an early lead in the 14-rider field. Morrison making his move in·and·out, high-and·low, surged ahead of Sanders on the third lap with Keith Crecelius of Santa Ana trailing a close third. Still Sanders was not to be denied his lead and came roaring back to regain the front spot on the very next lap. At this point the crowd began to sense the drama unfoldinll: between the two determined riders, each at his very best. o ~ w Z W .J U > U Tom DoW. No. 78. leads Bob Sanders. No.1, and field, during TT action. Two laps later, it was Morrison back in the lead while Doty moved into the act with a come·from-behind effort taking third. On the eighth lap Doty out-dueled Sanders for second and set his sights on Morrison for the next four Laps finishing a close second to Morrison at the checkered. Third was Sanders ahead of Crecelius (Yam), and John Carbone (Kaw). All good things eventually come to an end, and for Morrison, his fmal victory came in the 100 F.T. Main. And th.at was the only easy win for Morrison as he once again took the measure on both Sanders (Yam), and Doty (Hon), his two toughest rivals of the evening. You know by now that this meet has to rank among the toughest whenever Sanders is blanked in these events in which he viru tally has clinched the track championships. A fouJed plug ruined Morrison's bid for his fourth big win in the 125 F,T. Main as he pitted while holding the lead ahead of - that's right, Sanders and Doly. At starter's Bob Schoeman's checkered, it was Sanders ahead of Doly, Crecelius, and Wayne McEn tyre (Suz) in the 14-rider, 12-lap event. Goade made his way to sccond the hard way by disposing of such top talent as Paul Coberly, and Mi~e Clarke, and in the final three laps appearcd to be a cinch to take Hop kins for the lead as they dueled wheel·to·wheel. Finishing third was Clarke (Bul) while fourth and fifth went to Coberly (Bul), and Denis Porter (H.D.). You just do not become high point man by being satisfied with a second, so Goade finding himself trailing Hop kins in the 250 F.T. main the final event of the evening, Goade just poured the coals to his Bultaco and surged ahead of Hopkins on the sixth lap of the 12-lap event to take the lead and the checkered ahead of Hopkins, Coberly, Clarke, and Jim Miller (Ossa), to climax one of the fastest F.T.
