.. J.N., THOR DUEL CD " rf. . u o ~ w Z W ..J ~ o HARE & HOUND SOGGY DRY LAKE, CAL., Oct. 17, 1971 - The Hare 8< Hound hosted by the Jackrabbits was supposed to have been 2 loops of approximately 42 miles each, but it seems they were aqually closer to 30 miles each. The first loop was a slow twisty rocky one which one rider described as being more like an enduro than a race. The winners were around the first loop in about 45 minutes. The second loop was much easier, mostly fire roads, and quite fast. Larry Mahoney who finished his first desert race since June 6, raved about the firs t·loop markings but said danger-marks were poor elsewhere. Rich Thorwaldson beat J.N. Roberts to the smoke bomb but was unable to stay ahead and J .N. ca!"e through the pits a lead of a few feet. At the end, the order was the same,' but J.N.'s Husky was a couple of hundred yardsahead of Thorwaldson's Suzuki. Next was Bill Friant, aboard a Puch. He took first 175 Expert. Bill Bogner, who's been doing rather well lately on his C-Z, slipped just a bit to take fourth. 01' Desert Fox Mike Patrick slipped in just behind Bogner and just ahead of Tom Brooks who was riding the hot Carabela from Mexico. Brooks gets first 125. In the trail bike class Mitch Mayes was able to wrest the win from rival Tom Clark. Both ride Baja's. Following those two were Wayne Cook, Jim Sumners and Larry Roseler. All of whom are riding H-D Baja's. (Dick Wright is in dispose. Full results next week.) RESULTS J.N. SIGNATURE. _ Bill Harmer At 3:15 on the morning of October 12, 1971, Sandy Bennett of Ashland, Oregon, mounted on a 1964 Harley-Davidson "Full dress" motorcycle, pulled into the U.S. Customs station at San Ysidro on the Mexican border just 18 hOUTS and 15 minutes after he had been check out by customs officials at Blaine, Washington on the Canadian border 1427 miles away. Bennett made one stop en route in Sacramento, California where he had to stop for seven minutes to refuel. His stock motorcycle was equipped with extra gasoline tanks and an aircraft-type oil cooler which circulated 12 qts. of lubricant. What appeared to be . a regular style "scoot boot" was actually an auxiliary 711. gal. fuel tank_ and 12-quart oil reservoir but strapped atop them was another 15 gal. drum which allowed him to carry 28 gallons of gas. The "radiator" of the oil cooler was suspended in front of the gasoline drum in a position directly over Bennett's right shoulder where it could receive full benefit of the slip stream from the fairings. A manually operated valve allowed him to control the circulation of the oil according to the engine temperature. He also installed a manually operated chain oiler which assured safe' running lubrication during his record-breaking run. This was the third time that Bennett has set a border-to-border record. His first mark was 21 hours and 8 minutes established on June 2 of this year to break the record of "Boon" Bundock, of 23 hours fiat which was set May 9. Bennett received word that this mark was beaten on the weekend of Oct. 3 by Richard Poppoff with a time of 19 hours, 7 minutes which decided him to make this run. Bennett also holds the sidecar record for the run with a time of 26 hours, 15 minutes which he set on July 19 of this year. The motorcycle used in making these dashes is not specially built and is used regularly for everyday transportation by Mr. Bennett and his wife who often accompanies him. Perhaps the most unusual thing about the machine is the 280,000 miles that it has logged. It is the only motorcycle that he has ever owned and he has no interest in trading it off for a newer bike. He bought the machine new in Yuma, Arizona in 1964 and has personally put every mile on it. He has travelled in 45 of the United STates, 2 Mexican states and 3 Canadian provinces. Bennett IS a 6'1 ", 280 pound ex-Marine 'who once considered professional foothall as a career, says that he will go back to Ashland and if someone else happens to break his new record, he'll put the special tanks back on the bike and defend his title.
