ell r:: ell ~ ri o ~ w Z W ...J U >- U GREY, SHAW TOP O.C.F. By Mike Capalite COSTA MESA, CAL., Oct. 15,1971 While the chilly ocean breezes and the threat of rain may have kept the crowd down, it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the few who braved the elements for the evening's races. Neither did it slow down the riders as the races were just as fast and exciting as they were the week before at the United States Championship. The main difference was the performance by Larry Shaw. Last week Larry had started out good and had been in contention for the championship for most of the evening until he had a run of bad luck, but tonight he was riding like he had wanted to last week. The only thing that kept him from a clean sweep of the evening was a second place in the Handicap Main behind Billy Grey. Grey used his 10-yard handicap to the utmost advantage as he shot into the lead, getting around the track in fan tastic times. Riders like Shaw, Mike and Steve Bast, and Mike Konle must have been incen tive to let it alJ hang out. Shaw had a little trouble getting away as the pack stuck together, making it anybody's race. Larry gained a number of new fans as he pulJed past Larry Moon into the second slot .and hard-charged after Grey, but Billy had build up a commanding lead. The Scratch Main was one of the smoothest seen at this oval. Off the line, it was Sonny Nutter and Shaw into the first comer. Nutter had lifted the front wheel a little but kept it on anyway. As they came out, it was Shaw on the inside and Sonny on the outside with both of them going all out down the back straigh 1. Nutter drove in a little too hard and drifted wide and Shaw took the advantage. Steve Bast moved into second, but Sonny came right back in the next comer. Mike Konle had been right behind them looking for a hole to move into and when Steve went wide again on the next comer, Konle was under him in a flash and into the number three spot. While the gap between Shaw, Nutter and Konle didn't change, you knew they were going1ike gangbusters. The cheers of the fans at the fmish showed th e rid.ers that their performance was appreciated. The Second Division Main was one of the closest battle in this division yet seen as the riders were bunched up aU the way for the first three laps as Jim Castor and George Armas fought for the lead in the first lap. Armas pulled away but the rest of the pack was so close that a hankie could have covered them. Scott Sivadge did a beautiful job of working his way through this pack into third until he tangled with Rod Parsons. Armas finished a clean win with Castor in second. These boys are looking more like first division riders every time they come out. Next year the hot·shoes better watch out.
