"You dumb or something? This race is sponsored by Olympia and I just ha'ppened in the right place at the right time. Help yourself." uSure is a pleasant way to watch racing. Some of those other beer firms had better follow Olympia or they ain't gonna sell any beer to the motorcycle guys:' "Okay, Okay, tha-t's enough of the commercial. Who do you work for anyway? Just cool It and watch the bikes'" uJeez, did you see that guy pass those two back markers?" uYeah, that's Doug Grant, the young AJS 'works' rider. He's super neat:' UNo kidding. What sort of bike did you say he's on?" uAJS. Don't ask me what it stands for but they're English and made by the Norton people._Very strong on handling apparently, although the new ones like Doug rides are supposed to have a much zappier engine than last year:' "IS that-right? I'm gonna take up 250 Mota Cross soon and no way will my present clapped out scooter stand up to courses like this. I'm wondering what I should buy." "You could do a lot worse than get an Ajay. They're getting stronger by the minute:' "How come you know so much about 'em?" "I just know about all the makes and I spend my Sundays waiting around for guys like you to ask questions. If you take my advice you'll- get yourself a new Ajay Stormer and get hauling after Doug Grant. AND HE'S GOING TO •••.•.••.•BUT DOUG'LL TAKE SOME CATCHING!! I Davis Takes Spillway Honors By Mike Anderson Photos by Chuck Anderson SANTA MARIA, CAL., Sept. 5, 1971 The 500 Senior event, wbich was pronounced a personal grudge race on July 4th when a three-way tie resulted between two Spillway locals Mike David and Gary Chaplin and European veteran Russ Darnell, found a surprise winner today at Spillway Park. A new champion was declared. Young Mike Davis took top honors and first place gold with Darnell a close second. But it still wasn't a total loss for The Hall Mile Dirt Track Suzuki as David took the overall win while riding a Suzuki 400. The first moto saw nothing unusual. Darnell was first with David second; but, the second moto watched David jump to an early lead and hold it all the way with Darnell working his way up from a bad start to second. Now with each rider having' a first and a second the final moto would declare a winner. In the first comer David pulled to an immediate lead with Darnell running about 4th. Darnell seemed to be slowing down as Mike took the win by a wide margin. The 250 Seniors saw John Grossini cleanly sweep all three motos on his Husky with Sherman Schneller ridinR. always riding in striking distance and Joe Cushaway taking third. Another Cushaway, Leroy, took bis works 380 C·Z, which be purcllased from John DeSoto, to an overall win in Open Juniors.
