Gennai Doubles Again· at Fremont·· By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., Aug. 27, 1971 Seventeen-year-old John Gennai again dazzled an overflow house at Fremcnt Raceway's Friday night scrambles. Gennai, who is currently holding down the point lead for the number 1 plate in the district, gained yet wnother point over Jim Foley. In the 250 heat race action. Foley won the first over Mike Renslow. Renslow has had a tougb luck season and just lately has put everything together. Foley led out the head over Rocky Malynn with Renslow tucked in third. Mike got by Malynn easily and began to press Foley but after experiencing as much bad luck John Gennai has an enviable style: feet up around the turns with the throttle turned wide op~n. throughout the year, he wisely tucked in and finished second. Rick Hocking won the second heat over Pat McCaul and Alex Jorgensen. McCaul and Jorgy diced throughout after Dennis Huff slid out on the .second lap. Craig Filmer led out the third heat but got wide in the fllst lap leaving a clear shot for Gennai who went on to win with Bruce Teixeira second over Craig Michie. In the short main, Renslow got off the line first, a minor miracle in itself. He and Foley fought it out into the first turn with Foley having the advantage of the inside line. Exiting, short track specialist Pat McCaul held second with Jim Peter takes to the outside in the 250 Novice Main; Farley (44T) wound up third and H. Kunsman (109SI fourth. , .... _-, • Suzuki • Kawasaki Sale * Service custom work * all makes Montesa· BMW· Service Parts 346 EI Camino Real Redwood City, Calif. As the first four went across the Jump, Gennai took ovet fifth spot and began to get sorted ou t from a fairly p,oor start. At the end of two laps, it was Foley, McCaul. and Gennai working his way up. The next lap put him by McCaul and for the last lap it was a real charge. Going across die jump nearly sidewise, he caught Foley and rode right around him on the outside of the following right hander and nearly brought down the house in the process. It was almost unimaginable that this guy could ride right around a great rider like Foley alld hold a line, feet up and gas on. He did it and the fans went crazy. So how do you follow up and act like that? Well, it goes something like this. The first of two 650 Expert heats had Gennai winning over Larry Lane and Dan Hughes by four seconds. The next went to Bill Landsborough on the Selby BSA beating out Tiffen Mullenax and Bruce Teixeira. Landsborough rocketed to the lead in the Main but it only took one lap for Gennai to come up with the necessities for passing and that is what he did and went on to a small advantage over Landsborough and Mullenax. ' Mike VanLienden won his second 500 Expert Main and pulled ahead in points for that division. His Selby Montesa had its hands full of Rick Hocking again who took his third second in as many weeks in that class. Jim Peters came up with his second straight 250 Novice Main Event win and came within two points of turning Amateur. The Palo Alto M.C. club man now has 10 poin ts in the .250 division and that puts him fourth behind Hocking, Gennai, and Foley. When he turns Junior, his poin ts transfer and he has a chance at the high point brass. Ken Eggers won his third straight 100-125 combined Junior and Expert Main and with Mike Allen turning Expert, this class will be interesting to watch as the likes of Eggers and Chuck Kole pick up enough points to make Expert. the HarleyDavidson outperformers '" .... - '" N C. en '" ~ w Z W ...J () >()
