Foley Drives Closer to Gennai; Landsborough Drives Through By Bill Spencer HAYWARD, CAL., Aug. 27, 1971 National Scrambles Champ, Jim Foley gained five very faluable points on curren t leader J oh o Gennai as Gennai failed to trophy in the 250 class, a rarity 'and fell in the 650 class to DNF, even more rare an occurrence. Fo1ey grabbed the lead in the fJrst 250 heat race over Gary Tonda and after the second lap, Pat McCaul got under Tonda and finished second to Foley. In the second heat Pat Hennen led the idstance over Mike VanLienden _ with Gennai catching up for third. Tor the 15 lap Main, Hennen again took the early lead chores and when it appeared there might be no way around him, Foley put the hard push on and closed in. On the sixth lap, Foley went underneath and pressed his way around. SAN JOSE MILE TO %MILE Troubles with sanctioning an $8000 mile at th.e Santa Clara County fairgrounds have forced the Bob Barkhimer group to reschedule the Oct. 10 event for a regular half-mile. The planned mile would have set the National riders up for the Ontario running but the AMA would not grant the sanction. In the 650 Expert heats, Bill Landsborough rocket-shipped his Selby BSA out of the back row to win the first and Leaky Larry Lane won the second with Salinas champ Rick Otto unable to do better than last. Dennis Spence and Landsborough took over the leading chores and pulled away to an early lead over Lenn Mortensen in the final. Gennai was still having his problems but worked up to third by lap three. On the next lap he got by Lenny and began to cut the leaders distance down fast. Spence was holding a good line on Landsborough as Gennai came up behind and after only two laps, Gennai got by Landsborough. With Spence holding a tight line in the spectator comer, Gennai was forced to try the outside and when he did, bingo, he fell; Landsborough won. Jeff Pacheco won the third 250 Jr. heat and led the Main early but succumbed to bumps and\ wound up fifth. Ron Hayano won it over Steve Walker and Mike Cochran. Frank Barrero overcame his case of the fally-downs from the previous evening's races at Fremont to win the 200 Novice Main over Paul Reid and Wes Cooke.
