Bower Tops Juniors By Eric Raits CARLSBAD, CAL., Aug. 8, 1971 Junior Chuck Bower won four out of the six molos he entered at the CMC motocross at Carlsbad Sunday to take a pair of overall wins. Bower rode a Penton in the second division of the 125's and a Maico in the third division of 250's. Bryan Porter furnished Bower's main opposition in the small bike division, placing second on a Bultaco. Joe Early overcame a lackadaisical lOth place finish in his fllSt moto to close the day with a pair of strong seconds behind Bower in the 250 Juniors. Mud was the undoing of many a Junior's finish. Carlsbad's mudholes arc ,.: ~ w Z W ..J U >- U (CZ) won all three of his motos but left a real tangle behind him. R. Mayne, M. English and R. Dominguez all had identical records, finishing second, third and fourth one time apiece to tic for second overall, The CMC point system is designed to avoid tics but the thrcc riders managed to make a shambles of the system. In Expert action, Marty Tripes (CZ), repeated last week's easy Sunday riding to win the 500 class. Tripes sped away to leave Maico riders Dave Smith and Mark Nohr bauling for second and third. Smith and Nohr were tied for second going into the last moto when Nohr dropped out of the fight with an errant fuel line. The second tum wallow cost Doug Sherman a seemingly sure win. Sherman (CZ) had a first and second with no one near his point total going into the last race. The 250 Junior consistent winner got off to a good start and had the win wrapped up when he became a victim of a seven bike pileup that dropped him to 12th at the finish. Kevin Schmidt (CZ) took full advantage, won the last moto and took a fint overall. Kendall Markley chased Sherman in the second moto until he passed him but a DN F in the fint raCe for the San Diegan dropped him to third overall. In the 500 Juniors, Roland Rodriguez of the casual'Tripes. Tilson Shumate (CZ) beat out Brent Rhoades (Hus) and Leonard Mellgren (CZ) in the 250 Expert class. Murray Hoffman (DKW) easily won the 125 Expert class ahead of Tom Cook (Bul) and Patrick Welsh (Yam). Mark Dobbs and Randy Rodriguez swept their Intermediate classes clean with thrcc wins apiece. Dobbs (DKW) won the 125 class and Rodriguez (CZ) topped the 250 class. Lorna Linda's Bud Feldkamp had the best record in the 500 Inter'mediate bash aboard bis Husqvama. Bart Stebbins (DKW) beat Bill Bames (Pen) once but Barnes won the last two motos to top the 100 Juniors. James Beck (Yam) was second and Stebbins fmished third. CZ rider Ken Bushmaier led Richard See (DKW) across the finish line thrcc times to win the fint division of 125 Juniors. See fmished second and Eddy Kubota was third on a Yamaha. Three CZ's were involved for the first two spots in the second 250 Junior division. Water Young came out on top while Gary Boozell and Tim Kuykendahl tied for second ahead of John Schulz (Ric). CMC action shifts to Saddleback Park Aug. 15 in a wrap-up of the Penton Series. Sept. 5's scheduled race at Osteen's has been switched to a new facility at EI Toro, Cal. If you're going to be the winner of your division, it's the result of being a winner all the way along the line. In the fint moto for the 250 machinery, Claire, with a shoo-in lead, suddenly found everything going lemon-sour when his chain unwound at the beginning of the flfth lap. Now, this writer has seen racers dent the ground with a thrown helmet for a lesser fortune, but not so, CaIire. Very quickly and calmly, the young rider stepped from his saddle, slid the links back into place, and still joined the hunt in a solid third position behind.the new leaders RAndy Nordke (BuI) and Steve Nutter, who was also astride a BuL Then, while once again proving the meaning of class, Claire led the final two motos for the crew in somewhat of a breezing fashion. It'll be interesting to watch C-Z Claire against Senior riders in what should be the near fu ture. Another C-Z racer not needing much of an introduction, particularly to those facing him each weekend, Greg Robertson, was responsible for a grand slam - three straigh twins - over a talented field of 125 's. Mike Clark (Bul), Fred Dewisch (Yam) and Victor Viscio (BuI) were second through fourth behind winner Robertson. Rick Rcmelin, mounted on a Husqvama, carried home the overall victory in the Open Junior class. Finishing behind Rcmelin were Dan McMuBen (Hus) and Dan Pope (BuI). Pete Schoerncr, competing in the 100 division, had a wild battle with Pat Woods (Hod), Jimmy Gappa (Hod), and Jim Woods (Hod) before gaining the day's overall for the group. (Results on page 28)
