Undaunted, Franklin came back to take second. while Brown was fourth in his class. By Rich Hoffman IRVINE, CAL., Aug. 8, 1971 - I t was a beautiful hot day at the A.C.A. motocross at Saddleback Park. Approximately 80 riders enjoyed three 20-minute motos on a brand new track and free showers after the races. With a new layout there are always different opinions, but today it was almost unanimous among rider I talked to that it was a beautiful track. In the 250 Senior-Intermediate Combined race, Intermediate Bruce McDougal stole the show on a prototype Yamaha. McDougal beat out every Senior including Morris Malone (AJS) and David Boystrum (Mai) who finished first and second in the Senior division behind McDougal. A pair of CZ riders picked up first and second in the 500 Senior division today. Carl Colton and Richard Franklin finished one-two with third overall going to Ron Duggan on a Husky. In the 250 Juniors, the largest class of the day, it was CZ leading again with Erik Strommer taking first overall over Rickman-mounted Jim Castillo. (Results on page 28) Rickm.an Pilots Inspired a t As co t Night Mo to cross By Eric Raits GARDENA, CAL., Aug. 5, 1971 Bryar Holcomb and Jeff Wright won their Expert classes at the Thursday night CMC motocross at Ascot Park. Holcomb and Wright, both riding on the Rickman-Metisse team, coaxed fine performances from their machines as their competition either feU off or experienced mechanical problems. Holcomb strung six good rides together for a win in the 250's and a second behind Wright in rhe 125's. Wright put on a better than usual show because of a bad start in the last moto. The desert ace got his normal start in the first two, the kind which generally makes the 125 class at Ascot the night's yawner. Wright showed how fast he could really ride by working his way from the tail end to challenge the leaders in just two laps. As things started to get interesting, he clipped a log with his gear shift lever and was forced to drop back within sight of another win. J oh n DeSoto stretched his Ascot-Suzukj string with another three wins in overpowering fashion. The 500 Expert winner had to do some p " g in two races but the outcome was never in doubt. Bill Payne led the strong Hawaiian several times but succumbed to the pressure. Leading DeSoto at Ascot is like riding with a ticking bomb around your neck; time usually runs out before the checkered flag is waved. Junior qualifiers for the main events have to place high in their heats to transfer and 100 Jr. winner Dennis Andre (Hon) must have thought he'd never make it to the final, much less win after the first race. Andre got into some screwy traffic through the first turn and elected to go wide and stop rather than try the log barrier. Andre circled and got back on tlre course dead last and fought the tyros for a transfer spot. He made it to the main and ran away from his competition. A pair of first-time Ascot winners got the tall trophies in the 250 and 500 Junior classes. Darrell Wodd (oss) and Eric Olesen (Hus) got good starts and held off the other Juniors. Wood showed the effects of leading the final with a shaky first lap but settled down and looked smooth to the finish. Intermediate class winners were Tom Simpson (Ric) in the 500's, Patrick Perkins (Yam) 125's, and Alvin Blain (Kaw) 250's. The farailiar Suzuki ridden by Scott Skelton on again in the 125 Junior class.
