RECORDS FALL AT CORO
Photos by Dan Mahony
CORONA, CAL., Aug. 8, 1971
Perfect racing weather again was present
for the weekly Saturday night Corona
half mile events and the ideal weather
raised havoc with the record books.
With some riders missing due to the
Detroit national mile the rest saw a
chance to grab dollars and try for record
attempts. Gary Scott zipped in for
overall fast time and a new track record
for Junior riders, breaking his own
record set earlier this year.
Then Scott Brelsford went out in the
first Novice heat race and put five big
ones together for a new 250 marks, also
breaking his own track record.
With the fastest track ever, even
faster than national night, Scott then
came back to defeat the Experts in the
opening big bike heat, setting a new five
lap record. Terry Dorsch also brok eh t
eold mark for second best time of the
night as he won his heat. Eddie Wirth
then came 6n to win the third warmup.
Sammy Tanner, who blew a sure win
on Friday night, managed to grab off his
398th half mile win in one of the two
semi-main events. Paul Conserrie ran
second. Dave Smith topped Mike Haney
for the other semi win.
Three different riders led the "A"
IS-lap final before Gary Scott fmally
put away his fiTst decision this year
against the Experts in combined class
racing.
Ron Moore led the fiTst five laps with
Scott third, behind Dorsch. The three
ran as one until Dorsch moved to the
front on lap six with Scott right behind
by inches.
Then Scott put the pressure on and
took the lead on lap eight and went on
for his second main event win in 24
hours. Dorsch held second but had to
hurry in the late laps to keep Moore
from making a late comeback. Eddie
Wirth, an early lap challenger, finished
in fourth with Dave Smith in fifth.
The Novice final topped the big bike
races for excitement and as four
different riders were up front in the
eight lap final. It was John Sperry for
three laps, after Gary Caldwell had led
the opening round.
Then Steve Nichols took over and led
for two before Scott Brelsford got going
to come on strong, move through the
pack, and finally take the lead with only
two laps to go.
Seven differen t riders leading two
different main events. The type of
racing that makes racers and gives fans
their full return. That's the type of
racing that is fast becoming typical of
the weekly Corona events.
One Novice heat race had riders from
five different states on the line. The
track is different from any other in the
west. Winners on Friday nigh t at Ascot
may have to hustle on Saturday night.
The front two on Friday night last week
ran in the last two positions at Corona
in the final on Saturday evening.
To top off a great nigh t of racing,
Dorsch came on strong to upset Gary
Scott in the dash in another axle-rubber
A
from start to finish. A perfect night of
racing from start to fmish - and again
meeting the 10:00 p.m. deadline.
It should also be noted that the
Novices, who are required to run some
type of muffling devices, have now
broken every track record that they set
earlier in the year with open pipes.
"Less Sound does in fact get - more
ground."
