" Cl ~ .... Cl = o' Jones Ralli_es for Late Win; Einarson Downs Elma Noyices « " By Dick Sjoboen ~ ELMA, WASH., July 25, 1971 - It was a repeat performance by former nationally ranked Jim Jones (Tri) as he went inside Dick Waller (Tri) on the north tUrn and pushed on to the Elma Half-Mile checkered flag. The first laps saw Chris Hansen (H-D) in the lead, but as the race wore on it became a duel between WIler and Jones. Earlier this .season Jones won the only other half-mile professional event in this area. J ones had earlier won both his heat and the dash. Tony Paril1a (Nor) won all honors in the Junior division with wins in both the main and the dash. He was also the fastest Junior qualifier. The dash was a real screamer. Paril1a and Watterson (Yam) were wheel to wheel at the end of the first lap, remaining very close till Watterson took his Yamaha to the high side in the north turn in a spectacular sweeping slide which resulted in a spectacular sitdown for Tom. Parilla then easily went on to the win. Tony had to deal with WashinRton w Z W ...J o > o Junior point leader Randy Skiver (Tir) in the 12-lap Main. Parilla and his Norton led th~ pack for the first two laps, then Skiver took the lead for the next two. On the fjfth lap Paril1a outran Skiver on the front stretch, keeping the lead the rest of the way. In the Novice Main Event Jim Einarson (H-D) took the lead from Chuck Andrews (BuI) on the back straight in lap number one and went on to an easy victory. It was a hot cloudless day, but due to excellent track preparation, dust was practically non-existent till the running of the Expert Main late in the afternoon. The event drew only 61 riders, probably due to the National swing to the West Coast. This resulted in only two Expert heats, one Junior heat and four Novice heats. The spectator turnout was fairly good, however, and Rac,e Promotions Inc. should be encourage in their efforts here. This is the only half mile track in the Puget Sound area regularly scheduling motorcycle racing and it is a good spectator facility. (Results on page 32) Oliver Leads Large Turnout By Janis Randall JUNCTION CITY, ORE., July 24, 1971 - Tonight's race was one of the best of the season due to the 100-degree weather and the huge turnout or riders. It turned out to be a good night for Rick Oliver, who won the 100 and 125 A Main Events, though Ricky Graves from Washington (Kaw) in the 100 class, kept right on Oliver's tail, keeping him from getting an easy trophy, with Tom Whjtsell following close behind. In the 125 A Main Rick Oliver stayed in the lead through the race with Bill Sekermestrovich (Yam) and Jack Heater (BuI) following very close behind, making this race another hard-earned win for Oliver. Winner Ron Denny in tile 200 A Main class, riding a Bultaco, rode a very smooth race with Steve Schoonover (Bul) and Diane Cox (Bul) following close behind him. Earlier in the races Diane took quite a spill and was knocked unconscious, but luckily she only received a skinned chin. This didn't keep her from getting third in the 200 A Main. The 250 A Main provided most of the action for the night when Jack Heater and Billy Oliver tangled. Heater caught his foot in Oliver's rear wheel and the pair fell, causing a restart. Heater took a short trip to the pits to examine his foot. John Schoonover led the restart to the finish while being pressured by Washington ace Graves on a sanitary Bul. Oliver blasted through traffic to ftnish third in this talent-laden class. In the Open class Keith Nerseth, riding a Maico, led the race with John Schoonover, (Yam) riding right on his tail. Schoonover passed Nerseth on the last lap to take ftrst with Keith in second, and Steve Schoonover passed Nerseth on the last lap to take ilist with Keith in second, and Steve Schoonover following close behind for third. Once again Scott Nelson (Yam) devastated the Mini-Bike riders, but showing determination and consistency was Chet Campbell, (Hon), who worked his way up to second, with Bruce Hapley (Yarn) following very close behind.
