Spills Galore at Cycleland
By J. Noffsinger
CHICO, CAL., July 24, 1971 - A nice
and hospitable crowd welcomed a
crowd of new riders here at Cycleland
Speedway this evening. The weather was
excellent, and track conditions were
favorable to a fast evening of racing.
Usually the 100 class is the one which
has trouble with excessive pushing in
the corners which results in riders piling
up, and heats being stopped due to
riders and machinery on the track.
However, this evening- there was a
turn-about which resulted in some lme
racing in this class, and some shabby
racing in the 200 and 250 classes.

Speedway Show
By Bruce Young
RENO, NEV., July 22, 1971 - Small
tumou t of riders and fair size crowd
made the second in a series of speedway
races held here sort of anticlimatic.
The race was· of high quality but
there just was something missing about
the way that they rode. The track was
in excellent condition with one tum
making it possible to power all the way
around with one's feet on the pegs.
The big hero of the nigh t was Dave
Gifford, stealing the show by winning
all the races he entered.
A local rider that did well in the fmal
events was Jawa dealer Ron Smally of
Reno. This was Ron's first ride on a
Speedway bike and he really knows how
to ride. He fin.ished third in the Div. II
Main Event after giving the other riders
a real challenge.
Many riders from the Sacramento,
Calif., area came up again to help out
the show and went away with much of
the money.
All hope that things will improve in
Reno because this is a very en thusiastic
crowd and the track was prepared with
the greatest amount of care by Gus
Lauer.

CONTINGENCY AWARDS
(by Bassani, On Any Sunday
&many others) .
One rider on an undersized bike in the
200 class repeatedly was involved in
crashes which took its toll on riders and
machinery. He finally wrecked h.is own
bike to the point where it would no
longer run, and left the track to saner
and more th ough tful riders.
Dave Veffredo of Chico again pushed
his tired Bultaco to a well·earned ltrSt in
the 250 Expert Main. Dave simply
appears to get more out of this bike
than it appears to be capable of giving.
Jim Crenshaw, who. is leading in
points in tIie 250 class, returned after a
two-weeK absence, however, found he
had difficulty in traveling the track with
h.is usual quick, precise manner with a
wounded leg.
Several new riders showed up' this
evening, and Corkey Swadley of
Petaluma was the most noteworthy. He
won the 250 Scratch Main, and then
placed second in the 250 Handicap
Main. In the latter event he pushed Mike
Hardy of Sacramento all the way to
victory.
The sudden rash of accidents the past
few weeks have brought out a few
broken bones and many aches and
pains. They can be only contributed to
over·zealous riding on the part of rather
inexperienced riders !n the Main. Lately,
some more experienced riders have been
seen pushing their way into corners
where they do not belong. In the
interest in safe and sane racing there is
going to have to be more thought given
to how one should race here, and who is
doing th e dangerous racing, and what
should be done about it.
